Interim High Risk Pool could run out of money before 2014

That’s the conclusion of a recently issued paper by the National Institute for Health Care Reform. The paper warns that while 5.6 million to 7 million Americans may qualify for the pool, the $5 billion the Act allocated may be enough to cover only 200,000 people a year. “Policy makers will need to tailor eligibility rules, benefits and premiums to stretch the dollars as far as possible,” the paper recommends.

A few major problems with trying to implement a socialist healthcare system this late in the countries history...

Almost 1/4th, maybe even 2/3rds of the population have pre-existing conditions that are going to require costly hospitalization and medications. Where did I get this figure? the obesity rate. Obesity brings a variety of costly and chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney diseases, heart disease, non-alcholic fatty liver disease, higher cancer rates, and mental illness.

If a socialist healthcare system had been implemented about 30 years ago and preventative care was emphasized, it might be a viable option. As of right now its just stupid to even attempt until all of the sick people die off.

I thought this was because they already ran out of funding for people with existing conditions. I could be wrong or the article i read was wrong but that was my understanding. My wife has MS and her meds are $48K a year for Avonex. Luckily I have a good job with insurance.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33023986

That is more than a lot of people make in a year. There is no way that Avonex is worth $48k per year.

Until our government does something about big pharma, they might as well not pretend to do anything.

Which is not likely since they run our government.

obama says he has funding to "fingerprint" the brain. You know they are going to try to find a way to numb and dumb us all down.

It will lead to mind control and drugs that make the trouble makers more easy to deal with.

I'll look for a link
 Quoting: TDJ

Why go to all the time and expense of trying to deal with the trouble-makers? Time for a little visit to your "health-care provider" for your yearly "flu shot" and you'll have a sudden, tragic, unexpected heart attack.

Problem solved.

There is no use for the elderly and the disabled, even children who are the ones with disabilities, in obama's ugly world. Not surprised. But the people who support him who have disabled children will be the surprised ones.
 Quoting: truthwillsetyoufreeagain

You know, I told several people this would happen before Obamacare was rammed down our throats (on Christmas Eve, no less - how ironic was THAT??) and was hooted at and ridiculed for my warnings. I should be pleased that I've been proven correct, but this is one time that I really hoped I'd be wrong, and it is a terribly hollow victory.

It's been going on here in AZ for a few years. My friends son has autism and asthma and received state aid. They raised the bar for autism so he can't get the help he needs and my friend and her husband work 5 jobs between them to pay for the kids expenses. (one job is my friend volunteering at school to help with his tuition) Their son's inhalers are $230 a month, the state stopped paying for them so now he's in the emergency room 2x a month.

And Phoenix just GAVE 99 MILLION to the Chicago Cubs for a training camp here. GAVE! The city won't see a return on investment for 30 years.

Politics just plain suck. I'm NOT sticking up for the guy in office now, just sayin' they're ALL unfortunately uncaring, self-serving jerks. It would be nice to say "I wish it were like the old days", but I grew up during Viet Nam, so I can't.

The US is only 37th from the bottom of 191 countries in health care quality. How much worse do they want to make it before we all stop waving flags and bragging about how great we are and get down to work fixin' whats broke?

Yes - insurance companies have been raping this country for years - BUT - if you look at the PROGRESSIVE movement that has been influencing regulations for years, including the "GREEN" movement that successfully lobbied to change alubuterol inhalers (used by asthma and COPD patients among others) - CHANGE them to a kind of inhaler that won't harm the ozone layer - but did not work on a large portion of patients - it's truly disgusting. Everytime I sit behind a truck or school bus sucking in diesel fumes, I think how my father's albtuerol puffer was accused of killing the ozone layer.

Also, OP, this has been all over the news, it's not just one lady calling in to Hannity. The Washington Post, the liberal bastion of ignorance that it is, even reported:

Tens of thousands of Americans who cannot get health insurance because of preexisting medical problems will be blocked from a program designed to help them because funding is running low.

“What we’ve learned through the course of this program is that this is really not a sensible way for the health-care system to be run,” Cohen said.

No shit.

Tens of thousands of people are going to die under Obamacare. There ARE death panels, and Sarah Palin called it first and coined the term after reading the bill. We are screwed.

Under Obamacare, I have to pay at least $225 for my father's Spiriva and $220 for Pulmacort. Now I am using what is left of my 401k to buy this meds. When that runs out...they will want to force him into Social Services and make the taxpayers take care of him.

This was already covered in NUMEROUS MEDIA OUTLETS AS FACT.

The the poster who said they were going to vote 'nobody' instead of Republican or Democrat - I know that is the COOL thing to say these days, but the fact remains that this belongs to BARACK OBAMA and would NOT have been implemented under Romney. You want anarchy - you got the wrong country.

Obamacare doesn't really take effect until 2014.

Just sayin.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3987337

Actually, you are partially correct. The "BENEFITS" which we were all promised don't really start until 2014.

However, the TAX part of the Plan is ALREADY in place for THIS tax season (i.e., it will most likely affect YOUR refund THIS YEAR, if you're planning on one), and companies are already scrambling to get their ducks in a row in order to survive. This includes conversations with their current insurance providers, (after which they may decide to drop their current insurance and just pay the penalty if it's cheaper), adjustments in the number of individual employee hours, and trimming staff to essential personnel (i.e., layoffs).

There are more than 1400 new regulations within this Bill. As businesses discover what they are. things are only going to get tougher.
 Quoting: Eggcellent

that's correct. So what is this thread talking about?

thats because the republicans in congress whittled away any possibility of Obama-care doing anything useful.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29234021

I would say there were only about 2 or 3 critters of both parties who werent in the pockets of insurance companies. It was a bipartisan sell out,,,, for sure..

So according to my husband, on his drive home from work today he was listening to WBAP 820 and a woman called in to tell Sean Hannity that her down's syndrome child was rejected (aged 3 y/o) for ObamaCare with a letter that stated that "They had already filled their quota" and they weren't accepting any more (down's syndrome children).

To make matters worse, she got a separate letter in regards to her (5 year post-cancer treatment) saying that she was denied -- because she has been classified as a pre-existing condition that has been 'cleared'.

DID ANYONE ELSE HEAR THIS CALL????
 Quoting: tandym

I didn't hear the call nor do I have any pertinent info... But as an avid US Govt observer and our current "president," it appears VERY clear the the appropriate name for "Obamacare" should have been "Major Corporate Insurance Company Care" where the poor insurance companies will be allowed to restrict care to the available funding levels available to to them (which will never be enough), but their profit margins will never be factored into how much money will be available for medical services.

Don't forget... Obama is a "People's" president. He will give everything he can to the people who funded his presidential races both past AND future. (He kinda likes it there in the White House.)
 Quoting: RockHall

On that same general subject, have you heard that Obama has morphed his (temporary) 2012 Campaign organization into a PERMANENT CHARITABLE organization, where any contributions are TAX DEDUCTIBLE, and corporations and private (i.e., "foreign") individuals can "donate" as much as they want to? The regulations are different for a "charitable" organization and a "political" organization. So, it will be easy for them to find all of their previous donors and get them on board the Obama Express. The same guy who ran Obama's re-election campaign is heading up THIS organization.

Sure doesn't sound like Obama plans on going anywhere when THIS term is over, does it?

Re: OBAMACARE REJECTED down's syndrome child - WBAP 820 - Sean Hannity (this afternoon)
I like (smirk) the fact States can tap into the estates of deceased beneficiaries of Medicaid. Use it and your kids lose their inheritance....

a) OBRA 1993 requires all states that receive Medicaid funding to seek recovery from the estates of deceased individuals who used Medicaid benefits at age 55 or older. It allows recovery for any items or services under the state Medicaid plan going beyond nursing homes and other long-term care institutions. In fact, The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) site says that states have the option of recovering payments for all Medicaid services provided. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) site says at state option, recovery can be pursued for any items covered by the Medicaid state plan.

b) The HHS site has an overview of the Medicaid estate recovery mandate which also says that at a minimum, states must pursue recoveries from the “probate estate,” which includes property that passes to the heirs under state probate law, but states can expand the definition of estate to allow recovery from property that bypasses probate. This means states can use procedures for direct recovery from bank accounts and other funds.

c) Some states use recovery for RX and hospital only as required by OBRA 1993; some recover for a few additional benefits and some recover for all benefits under the state plan. Recovery provides revenue for cash-strapped states and it’s a big business.

Your estate is what you own when you die – your home and what’s in it, other real estate you may own, your bank account, annuities and so on. And even if you have a will, your heirs are chopped liver. Low-income people often have only one major asset – the home in which they live and, in some cases, this has been the family home through several generations.

So what this boils down to is: if you are put into Medicaid – congratulations – you just got a mandated collateral loan if you use Medicaid benefits at age 55 or older! States keep a running tally.

Re: OBAMACARE REJECTED down's syndrome child - WBAP 820 - Sean Hannity (this afternoon)

SOMEONE is a fucking DUMBASS!

No one JOINS Obamacare. It's a law that forces people to either HAVE healthcare, OR be fined.

It had to have been an insurance provider that rejected the child, and THAT is illegal under the Affordable Care Act, and I hope they're charged for it!!

Geeze, SOME people..

sigh

So are they expected to rot until they die?

I thought this was because they already ran out of funding for people with existing conditions. I could be wrong or the article i read was wrong but that was my understanding. My wife has MS and her meds are $48K a year for Avonex. Luckily I have a good job with insurance.

you are correct - they were going to stop taking people with pre existings, was costing too much money. It is sad sad sad. Those of us that saw the dangers of obamcare tried to tell other people . Now they will get a rude awakening.

And those of us who warned it wasnt universal single payer but a sell out, were laughed at and called Obamabots. We were right, it was a sell out...

And they called Palin an idiot for saying there would be death panels.
Well, it turns out she was right. Again.

Libtards must feel like idiots knowing they have a lower IQ than Sarah.

Actually she has a very high IQ.

She is beautiful and successful and republican. They have to hate her, tear her down and make her look like an idiot.

Society should be ashamed of itself....and the press for what they did to that woman......

I'm not saying she would have been a great leader, but I'm tired of hearing how dumb she is when nothing is further from the truth.

Re: OBAMACARE REJECTED down's syndrome child - WBAP 820 - Sean Hannity (this afternoon)
