schooling is a state thing.

He has to do it state by state.

Each state has different homeschooling laws.

If you homeschool, I cannot more strongly urge you to join www.hslda.org - only about $100 a year gives you full legal support.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29310915

Wrong.
Schooling is a FED thing.
The money comes from the FEDS to fund the STATE Schools!

Don't be left behind?

Prove me wrong.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7759106

Property taxes fund local schools directly.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28649819

Yes but I think schooling is considered a civil right and, as such, it's subject to some Federal control. You have to fund it, but there are court decisions saying what you must fund. There's also Federal funding help, which comes with strings, and that way more control is exerted.

Homeschooled kids are weird and unsocialized. They don't go to college and they can't function in society. Further few parents are even qualified to teach their kids past pre-k. So yeah, homeschooling ought be illegal. At the very least, the primary educator must have a college degree in something.

I totally support people's right to homeschool, but I have never seen the point in sheltering the kids from today's realities. Children have to be prepared to deal with this culture. I send all my kids to public schools. I deprogram them on a daily basis. All of my grown kids are conservative in political bend and see the danger of what is happening now. I also let them watch scary movies, play violent video games, do social networking online, etc. Because that is the world of their peers and of their future. They are kind, hard-working, responsible, law-abiding young adults (the ones that are adults, still have some brewing at home).

I do believe being able to socialize in a way that enabled THEM to make choices worked to their advantage. Home-schooling just doesn't provide the same experience as going every day to a mini-city like a public school.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31907650

It's a misconception that homeschoolers are sheltered.

It isn't the same experience, it's better IMO. My son went to public school for 5 years. They weren't educating him properly at all. I fixed that at home.

I don't care if they're sheltered or not. The social benefits of school are not so important.

What I wonder is if you know enough history, science, math, English and foreign languages to give him a good high school level education. Because if you do, you are a rare parent.

And if the kid has questions?

Yes it's all out there. It's magnificently out there now, with Kahn academy and, at a higher level, Coursera and EdX courses from major universities. Wikipedia.

And if your child has the self discipline to learn it all on his own, day after day, month after month, year after year, that is one self-directed child. My kids would be doing other things on the internet.

And the different perspectives one gets at school are not just about the damned social issues that don't belong there at all. They are about coursework, subjects, it can help to have other people to talk to about what you're learning, and to be in an environment where everyone is dealing with this material.

But some manage it well, and as I said earlier, they end up with stellar college acceptances. How is yours doing?

He's doing great. He was more than two grade levels behind in math when he left public school (5th grade), and he'll be starting pre-algebra next year (8th grade).
Public schools in my state are just awful. I never started homeschooling because of social issues. It was purely because the schools sucked so bad academically. All the rest is bonus to me.

Wow you're doing great!

If he's come so far so fast, why not try to accelerate him a bit in math over the summer and see if he can complete Algebra I by the end of next year? But you may have to be competent at at least the Algebra II level to help him learn this material.

School may get better once they go to middle school or esp. high school. Elementary typically sucks because the teachers are as much babysitters as academic, and they don't know much about any of the subjects usually. In higher grades they often have degrees in the subject they teach.

So you may consider letting him try school again. It's good if he can go back a year accelerated in math. I think every school system selects the better math students in sixth or seventh grade to accelerate a year of math, and then all of math and science is better for them and they are the ones who have a real chance to become engineers and scientists.

It is the currently accepted scientific theory. I believed my child should learn what it is.

And I'm not just talking about evolution, but geology and astronomy even. There are creation science books that advocate a literal 7 day formation of the earth and the universe. There's no scientific evidence of that. I choose not to teach that to my child.
 Quoting: Oubliette

Really? You must have a great grasp of science and physics then. Answer this question for me.

If you were near the source of a black hole the mass of the universe, how much time would have passed for you, since the big bang until the present time?

Answer: About 7 days.

According to the 'latest' accepted theories of physics, time passes at different rates according to the gravitational field and the velocity of the reference frame in question.

A strong gravitational field slows down time. A mass about as large as the mass of the universe slows it down a lot. I wonder what God's reference frame is?

I think you still have a lot to learn, especially if you have been taught by government education camps.

Or even what is being taught in public schools about the OKC bombing or 911?

Trust me, you will puke (if you can find an old history book that hasn't been destroyed)

Oh, btw, those textbooks you pay $$$$$$$$$ for in taxes for your public school? They get burned, so no one can go back and see what has been re-written.

Bullshit. My daughter has been home schooled for 12 years. She is not awkward or weird, and has plenty of friends that attend the public school. I hold a Bachelor's degree in education. I walked away from the public school system because I could not stand it anymore, for many reasons.
As a 3rd grade teacher, I kept my own daughter out of the public school system because it dumbs children down, more than you realize. My daughter is working on a 9th grade level in math and science. I know high school graduates who cannot even make change at their jobs or do basic alegebra. Some, can barely read.

My daughter functions quite well in society and is involved in two different types of sports and socializes with children of all backgrounds. I'm not like the Duggar family who isolates their children and only allows them to socialize with the approved people.

You have a lot of misconceptions about home schooling, and not everyone can be filed in the same category.

we had 'endeavour readers', (boxes of state sanction readers', like 'digger the dog in year 1'

the one i remember in year three was captain cook stepping off a little boat in australia to plant the union jack, and the nasty aboriginees came running out with spears, so one of the sailors shot one and they all fled....

lies, and political manipulation.

many years later i searched for the book out of interest... it is no longer there. out of interest, aboriginal wars never killed, they merely rendered you useless to look for food and water by stabbing your arm or leg, and once you were down you were considered defeated.

Just thought I would throw this in:

I homeschooled both of my kids K-12. One chose not to go to college and makes 50k++ (dyslexic), and one is in college working towards a doctorate in physics (is also high-functioning autistic).

Both of them continually "THANK" me for homeschooling them. They say they had a much better education than their peers, and are far better off for it.

If you want to - you can. No matter the obstacles.

That is so false I don't know where to begin. I was taught to read and write at a very early age; my mother put me in a private school. The private school was good, but my mother felt it would be more advantageous to homeschool.

I participated in ballet lessons several times a week. I was on the local softball teams every Spring/Summer session. I participated in spelling bees. I had music lessons. I took swimming lessons. I was around many children, I was not awkward. I went on to a university, where I got a degree in two majors and did a lot of theater work, debate, speech, etc. I run a business now and must deal with a wide array of individuals. I'm far from being "weird and unsocialized".

Your narrow mind might be incapable of comprehension regarding things that are different, but some of us know better.

Oh c'mon now. You make it sound like the public schools have qualified teachers handling these subjects. Read some articles in the Chicago Tribune's school section about the retards "teaching" in their system...teachers that can't pass eighth grade level tests, aren't qualified to teach the subject/s they are assigned to, etc. A loving, committed parent can/will obtain all information necessary to provide their kids with an excellent education. It's the lazy, stupid parents that would be risky to entrust with homeschooling, but then, I don't think many lazy, stupid people would take on such a responsibility.

I've heard this story, and it's messed up. A German family of evangelical Christians were homeschooling in Germany because they felt the govt schools went against their beliefs. Well, in Germany, homeschooling is illegal. After they were heavily fined and the govt threatened to take their kids away, they sought asylum in the USA.

They were granted asylum and were living here legally, until the justice dept decided that their right to homeschool their children because of religious conviction was not something that should be protected, and they should be sent back to Germany.

So while illegals are being given amnesty, this family that came here legally in order to escape persecution, is being sent back!

Tell them to move to Los Angeles ASAP. Seriously, LA is a sanctuary city, ICE can't touch them
