The compound annonacin contained in the seeds of soursop is a neurotoxin and it seems to be the cause of a neurodegenerative disease. The only group of people known to be affected live on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and the problem presumably occurs with the excessive consumption of plants containing annonacin. The disorder is a so-called tauopathy associated with a pathologic accumulation of tau protein in the brain. Soursop grows through out the southern hemisphere, so why aren't the people who eat it daily immune to cancer?

Graviola demonstrated anticancer effects in vitro, but has not been studied in humans. Despite the lack of human data, many websites promote graviola to cancer patients based on traditional use and on the in vitro studies. Caution is required as there is no evidence of safety or efficacy.

There are several in vitro studies, but no human studies seem to have been performed. The result of such studies can't just be transferred to humans, you have to actually perform some clinical studies. The in vitro studies show that it has some potential as an anti-cancer drug, but that is a far shot from being proven effective in actually being safe and effective against cancer in humans.

There is also some data that the annonacin in graviola can cause an atypical Parkinson disease (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

With the possible danger of causing atypical Parkinson and no evidence that soursop is actually effective against cancer in humans, I would strongly recommend to avoid it.

Graviola, American Paw Paw, and the Australian equivalent (the name I forget at the moment) are all closely related to the papaya. These plants contain helpful enzymes and anti-tumor compounds to a greater or lesser extent.

Highest anti-cancer properties are found in the American paw paw, then graviola and the Australian variety. However, the active compounds can be highly variable depending upon season and the part of the plant that is used.

Standardized American paw paw as found in the "Cell Reg" product is the most effective. It is gathered from leaves, twigs, and stems in the Spring when the active anti-tumor compounds are at their highest concentration. It is then standardized into uniform potency and capsulated for use and convenient administration.

Paw-paw should generally not be taken as a preventative, only therapeutically.

Should not be taken within 24 hours before or after standard chemo/rad. Can lower blood pressure and should probably not be taken with blood thinners.

High dose IV Vit C has also been found to be very effective and fast-acting (e.g., 4 to 6 weeks in come cases) in reducing tumor size with zero negative side effects. Must be administered by IV to bypass stomach and to achieve necessary high ml/l blood levels to be effective.
