For what it's worth... if you haven't done this to your pc...
I cloned my 1TB HD and put 2 SSD drives in it's place.

OMFG...

My laptop boots win 8 in under 10 seconds...

I can go from 0 to GLP in 12 seconds.

Every application I open is INSTANT.

Why the hell did I not do this earlier.

I liken this to when I went from a modem to cable internet.

Do yourself a favor and run your boot drive off a SSD.

It'll slow down some in a couple weeks. It'll still be fast, though.

This is great till one of the 2 spanned drives fails,,

Then you lose ALL your stuff.

You need ANOTHER drive equal in size to the sum of the 2 SSDs.

Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. Yup. I used to design high density storage servers and always had them booting off of a pair of raided SSD's. Very fast. I've got a system that runs off of a thumb drive stuck in the motherboard that boots quick as well.

So about ~$325 / 500 GB 2.5" SSD? Cheapest I see on Amazon. I have two 500GB drives on both of my laptops. That's not a cheap upgrade...$1200 for all of them or $600 for just the system drives, unless I just do mine and leave my wife's as is :)

You could just install the OS to a smaller cheaper SSD and benefit from the quick boots and fast OS response while doing everything else on a conventional platter based drive. I do it and it's still an improvement.

Did that in '09 w/ my i7 upgrade.

You RAID 0 (stripe) the 2 drives, right? Only nubs mirror their OS drive ;p

Shit my pants when I was able to install Photoshop in under 2 min from a cached IMG file o.0

RAIDING SSD's is bad. Doing anything besides a RAID1 with SSD's ruins TRIM.

Don't RAID your SSD's. You'll get uberfast i/o, but without TRIM most SSD's deteriorate quickly.

Yeah that's cute! I should time this one, I am very happy with this laptop I bought recently, it sure boots up fast, Win 7 Professional, 4 GB RAM. It's refurbished and a couple of years old, but no comparison to the outdated castoffs I've had up til now.

Re: For what it's worth... if you haven't done this to your pc...
FWIW, SSD speed is affected by size. Small SSD's are slower than larger ones. However, by the time you reach 150-200gigs the gain begins to be insignificant. The difference is very noticeable between say a 50 gig and a 200gig drive.

If you don't have quite a modern computer an SSD will do only a little for you. What kind of SATA ports does the MOBO have? It should be SATAIII for best performance.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28870983

Yep!

Sata III for the 256GB HD replacement

mSATA for the 128GB Local Media Drive...

I have a NAS (network storage) for the big stuff.

And as someone mentioned, just replacing the primary drive with a small and cheap SSD will make all the difference in the world.

As for RAID... I am not using any form of RAID. I did not see any advantage to this configuration and the extra wear on both drives is limiting.

Also, the "One Button Recovery" wouldn't work in a RAID configuration. I keep the recovery partition on the 2nd "less used" drive.

Re: For what it's worth... if you haven't done this to your pc...
A solid-state drive (SSD) (also known as a solid-state disk [1][2][3] or electronic disk,[4] though it contains no actual "disk" of any kind) is a data storage device using integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently. SSD technology uses electronic interfaces compatible with traditional block input/output (I/O) hard disk drives.

SSDs have no moving mechanical components, which distinguish them from traditional electromechanical magnetic disks such as hard disk drives (HDDs) or floppy disks, which contain spinning disks and movable read/write heads.[5] Compared with electromechanical disks, SSDs are typically less susceptible to physical shock, much quieter, have lower access time, and less latency.[6] However, while the price of SSDs has continued to decline in 2012,[7] SSDs are still about 10 times more expensive per unit of storage than HDDs.

Many SSDs use I/O interfaces developed for hard disk drives, thus permitting simple replacement in common applications.[8]
