Anyone have a translation of "Bergoglio" ?

His name means Roman

Actually Oglio means baker, so his last name is Stone Baker, or Stone Mason.

Bergoglio isn't nearly as interesting as Francis. For whatever reason, this prelate from the Jesuits chose to take the name of the founder of the single religious order least similar to his own.

If his family is from the Tyrol region, then the mixture of germanic and romance languages spoken in the region could have resulted in the combination of a german word (berg, or mountain) with "olla", "olio", "oglio" (roughly translating as "dish with many ingredients").

bergog is the only part of the last name that should be translated; its probably German....thus the Italianess of his family suspect.

It's kind of a funky lastname.

Bergoglio hasn't a direct translation in Italian. "Berg" may remind the city of Bergamo, in Lombardy. Also the "Oglio" is a river in Lombardy, and Lombardy is over 300 miles from Rome, so ... no reference to anything stony or Roman.

But I think his name may remind something in Hebrew: Ber reminds "Bar", that at the beginning of a name means "son of". In Ezekiel’s prophecy, "Gog" will be the leader of a great army that attacks the land of Israel. "Lio" reminds the latin "leo" that stands for "lion".

So the name might remind: "Son of Gog's Lion".

The Latin "Romanus" is not directly referring to Rome itself.

I held up the name Bergoglio in the mirror and it read Oilpopred.

Oil stands for petrol or petrus.

Its just means 'Manly Farmer', nothing to do with Rome, Peter or the colour black.
