There is a real tension between the old self that has been crucified with Christ (Rom. 6:6) and the new self that is growing in its knowledge of how satisfying Christ is in His person and His work. |

They are in opposition against each other - Ga 5:17a 2. Is the "Spirit" referring to the Holy Spirit, or the human spirit? a. There is certainly a war between the flesh and human spirit - 1Pe 2:11; Ro 7:23 b. Yet I believe here in Galatians it has reference to the Holy Spirit 3. The context of the epistle suggests that it is the Holy Spirit a. Note Paul's earlier references to the Spirit - Ga 3:2-3; 4:6 b. Through the Spirit we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness- Ga 5:5 c. Paul's later argument "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit" would not make sense if the human spirit is meant - Ga 5:25 d. Reaping everlasting life "of the Spirit" must refer to the Holy Spirit - Ga 6:8 -- While the flesh pulls us in one direction, the Spirit would have us go in another! |

Therefore when one engages in this battle, possessing the awareness of both spirit and fleshly influences, it becomes increasingly difficult to resist the flesh. This is because society tells us it is good, the culture promotes it, which means that when we are attempting to overcome our flesh, it can be incredibly confusing and stressful. Our spirits know certain fleshly pursuits are evil, but when the world broadcasts them as good, it makes discernment all the more difficult. I deal with this shit everyday. |

tokenday (OP) User ID: 32897239 United States 05/26/2013 10:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The flesh is the gateway to the demonic. Many times (unless it is generational, etc.), it is through the flesh that demons gain entrance into a person's life. We are first tempted by demons (the enemy works through his army of fallen angels) because they are seeking to gain entrance into our lives or carry out a plan to kill, steal or destroy us (see John 10:10), then once we give in, they become welcomed into our lives, and once they enter, they will serve as bad friends who will constantly seek to negatively influence us. Having a spirit of lust will be like working in an adult bookstore... it will work to wear you down and get you to give in. Without having that spirit, it is much easier to resist the temptation. But wait a minute, what about plain old temptation that is thrown our way on regular bases? We are not immune from that, are we? No, |

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. This verse is my knife. Demons can't hack this. |
