They are as white as any European can get. Nordic IS NOT universal ideal for European race.

I'm pretty well south eastern Italian I never considered myself white a day in my life.

Southern Italians, due to political classification are caucasian, but if you are asking ethnicity wise then you should look at the country geographically. Southern Italy is closer to countries such as Greece and Egypt. In the past, there was interbreeding between the countries and therefore Southern Italians may seem more brown compared to their Northern counterparts. As far as asking the question using the word white, some people may take it literally, as the blank paper we write on in school and others may think of Caucasians.
