What happens when we lose the internet for good?
So we have moved further and further into the digital age. Soon things such as books, encyclopedias, etc will not be printed ever again in the favor of online resources such as wikipedia and ereaders.

What happens in say 90 years from now when all printed material is completely gone and the internet gets wiped out by something like an EMP. Will all our knowledge be totally lost again?

Could this be what happened to society of the past? Should we make a plan to start engraving information on stone tablets or erecting pyramids in our back yards containing vital information?

5stars and a pin suggest :) ,

everything should be in book form , clay tablets , gold tablets etc ,

although when copying wikipedia into book form put a disclaimer notice on the first page stating that some of the contents are fictitious.

could happen, also might not. Kind of a crapshoot i guess.

I think it would be prudent to sculpt out your own rosetta stone along with relevant history into some medium that will withstand a few thousand years. Then bury it somewhere that will not be found or tampered with.

This way you could write yourself in as the king of the united states, and if no more information is around from our generation you could be the ultimate future troll.

What would we have to add... our list of Facebook friends?

Why do you think obama wants the internet "kill switch" so bad? Free speech among the masses is a huge threat to TPTB.

obama stopped talking about it, which leads me to believe he possesses it already.
maybe that's the bombshell Snowden says he has.

Why would they kill the net? All the info is out there, recorded on paper.
The lists are made. There are a lot of fake names on the lists

Not exactly -

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- After 244 years, Encyclopedia Britannica will cease production of its iconic multi-volume book sets.

Britannica usually prints a new set of the tomes every two years, but 2010's 32-volume set will be its last. Instead, the company will focus solely on its digital encyclopedia and education tools.

New history is at a great risk of being lost being solely digitized

Then all the masses will have is mainstream propaganda.

Ill mention you as king of the US if you refer to the queen of Ireland. I have engraving bits for my drill. Hard to do but if I do I will bury it. Haha

Very clever :-)

We get to think for ourselves again and be human and natural, good and bad.

I wonder how many people realize (probably a lot, like a silent majority), that the internet is a wonderful tool, but in our modern age, has become way too intrusive and overpowering, and in the meantime we have forgotten ourselves, esp. the very young.

Good point but all this would do is make revisionism easier.

There are people out there who "keep score" and will never let the msm dictate it's perception of history.
Never met one, but I'm sure there are quite a few

Future historians will argue for decades about whether the "Great Civilization of the West" fell in 2009 or 2010.

Those arguing the affirmative will use the lack of written records to prove their claim, while those arguing the negative will point out the newly-excavated hoard of iPhone 5S and quite reasonably theorize that they were a holographic storage device designed to record not only images and sounds from the user's surroundings, but also the thoughts and feelings of the user and those around him via a pair or sensors fixed to the ears.

I say we go completely digital - including ALL old books and manuscripts. Who are we to arrogantly deny our future generations a good mystery?

I have often thought if the people of ancient past didn't use stone for a few things we wouldn't know anything about our ancestors, there would be nothing

I've been making clay tablets with the worlds history of my time for years now.

They are hidden in a bronze age tomb that no one else than me, my father and my son knows about.

I hope someone finds them 3000 years into the future:)

Re: What happens when we lose the internet for good?
It'll all start over!

A lot of you probably aren't old enough to remember life before the "net" or when there were BBSs run on Apples & Commodores & 9600 baud modems. You could send a file or message to Germany & get a response back in two or three days! The net was built from this! There's a lot of us with the smarts & skills to build it up again.

We've got one thing the Gooberment doesn't, faith in mankind.

On another note don't make fun of the weird little guy that has a house full to the beams with books. He's going to be a rich rich man!!!!!!
