Correct - you know absolutely nothing. I know enough, because designing the data storage systems for disaster recovery (Alternate Site Operations) is part of what I do...

FACT - many major businesses still back up their data to plain old tape. Problem is, you can't run your business from a piece of tape. The majority of these companies have a contract with Sungard, Iron Mountain, Savvis, IBM/BCRS (Business Continuity Recovery Services) or some other "contract recovery facility" to recover at in the event of a disaster. Thing is, these contract houses sell services the way a health club sells memberships - they are massively oversubscribed, and they just hope the hell everyone doesn't show up at once.

Without power to their data center(s), and no disaster recovery facility to turn to, they've got nothing - no means of doing business, nor even of billing and collecting what they have in accounts receivable. so they have no money with which to rebuild. So If it all goes down in short order, most businesses will never come back up...

Hospitals and universities are the worst - I don't know a single one that actually operates their own "bunker facility" for continuity of operations. Most banks aren't much better, believe it or not. The insurance companies are probably in the best position to protect themselves and keep doing business, but it will all be pay-out, and when they're done, they're done and gone, too.

Without data and digital communications, all but about 200 businesses in north America will be be closed and shuttered in less than 45 days. No money, no product to sell (due to supply line failures), and every creditor demanding payment anyway.

I would add major banks and put them at the top of the list...

I used to run cable and fiber optics, hardline, and I always thought it would be easy for someone to knock out 911 services or an airport or other important communications with a set of bolt cutters and hooks. Especially if you had a concerted effort with a group. Syncronize those watches .......and cut. It would take a long while to get it back up and running. Especially if you hit the storage loops mid-span.

Me and my partner had to an emergency fiber run cause communications were knocked ut to the Austin airport. I can't remember what knocked them out maybe a car accident. Boy we bust tail on that one. These cable companies hubs aren't really secure. Blue prints could be easily obtainable. All these lines you see hanging up are so exposed for foul play I think. Don't have to be a high tech thinker to tinker. The lines should be underground maybe, but one could still get to them.
