Besides all of that, make sure you have some handtools. If you have to ask, you don't know enough. Get out a good carpentry book and look up what each does. Better yet, use them to see what it takes to cut, drill, or whatever with them.

Like this, a peavey for turning logs. Boy, it is essential. Nobody ever mentions it.


You might be able to find an old one that needs some TLC, some oil, and a new handle.

A planting tool: a good first home project

Here's a simple little tool that anyone can make. It comes in handy to ensure that your plants are properly spaced as well as having an edge for furrow making.

While I like knives and swords as much as any prepper, the practical tool I cannot do without is a fruit picking tool, sometimes called a fruit rake, that has a basket attached, sometimes a net, and some prongs to dislodge quickly the fruit or nuts up high.

While one can shake these on to a blanket, you'll get lots of bruising on your fruit that way. You sure don't want to be climbing all those trees post-collapse. There will be times you are harvesting and wanting to hurry, for you are walking back and being out at night might not be safe. This makes it much faster.
