Quoting: --Voltaic-- Ha! Hardly. Deep Impact is in no way even equipped to fulfill such a mission, let alone is it "lined up" to use equipment it doesn't have. STEREO and SOHO are perfectly equipped to observe the approach and departure of ISON, but that's because they're designed to observe the area around the sun so of course they're going to see a major sungrazer quite well. Okay, supposing we know of all the technology at their disposal. Still doesn't explain the coincidence value. Doesn't have to be their to view. It could be there to interact electronically, gravitationally, etc. Like I said, I am not claiming anything I can't prove. The line up is indisputable. OP no offense but please stop using mathematical terms when it's unlikely you can properly divide. You ruined all your credibility and earned a 1* from me based off of your idiotic assertion that the odds are 1: billion then akin to powerball odds. STFU or show me your math. |

Quoting: Dr. Astro It was designed to view comets, close up, it was not designed to stare at the sun which is what it would have to do to see ISON at perihelion. Oh, and it was not in a good state by the time the probe died. Being in deep space that long exposed to cosmic radiation for an extended period of time took its toll on the equipment, which was only designed for an operational life of one year. If it was designed for an operational life of one year, why you said that it should reach asteroid 2012 GT in 2020? ?????????????????????????????? As an engineer I would say it seems very wasteful for NASA to design it for an op life of 1 year. Any such endeavour would be a costly one, hardly seems they'd get their money's worth with only one year of op life. Yeah, prove it was only designed to be op for a year and yet still somehow view an Asteroid in 2020. What a load of crap. |

What? User ID: 49409677 United States 11/20/2013 01:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Suppose they know how long the solar output would fry the CCD. With ISON in the way, the solar output is slightly reduced in relation to the CCD. Quoting: --Voltaic-- Bullshit. ISON wouldn't affect it in any way. Fried is fried, ISON will not change that at all, nor will it reduce or increase the time it takes to fry it. Well, it will. Can we measure it, probably not. It may reduce it by 0.0000001%....in fact, this is calculable. Cross sectional area of Sun minus the cross section area of the comet in relation to the observer. That ratio against solar output. No, the comet is not going to block the sun's light, it's not a solid object except for the physical nucleus which is only a couple kilometers in size and will not be resolvable by even a 12" telescope. It would not affect anything at all. I was under the assumption that we couldn't even see the real nucleus because of how bright the coma has become. But I don't really know... |

I think everyone just needs to admit this...NO one knows what the hell ISON is. That seems to be a publicly stated fact by multiple astronomers. The fact the Astro is pretty much saying his word is law is kind of redundant considering I know he isn't a professional astronomer. Sure the probes and components may be rated for longer, but for the project as a whole to have a one year operating life, I'd need some convincing that this is factual. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Resident Led Zeppelin Expert (ask me anything!)
