People who eat NUTS are less likely to die of cancer of heart disease
DALLAS — Help yourself to some nuts this holiday season: Regular nut eaters were less likely to die of cancer or heart disease — in fact, were less likely to die of any cause — during a 30-year Harvard study.

Nuts have long been called heart-healthy, and the study is the largest ever done on whether eating them affects mortality.

Researchers tracked 119,000 men and women and found that those who ate nuts roughly every day were 20 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who never ate nuts. Eating nuts less often also appeared to lower the death risk, in direct proportion to consumption.

The risk of dying of heart disease dropped 29 percent and the risk of dying of cancer fell 11 percent among those who had nuts seven or more times a week compared with people who never ate them.

The benefits were seen from peanuts as well as from pistachios, almonds, walnuts and other tree nuts. The researchers did not look at how the nuts were prepared — oiled or salted, raw or roasted.

A bonus: Nut eaters stayed slimmer.

I prepare cheerios (chocolate), with nuts for lunch everyday. Sometimes I put raisins. I am so healthy! I need protein for lunch, since I have fruit for breakfast. I am 68. My vitality is remarkable. Go to Big Lots and buy nuts, mix in with the cereal (fiber), and you are good to go! And, yes, I remain slim.

Here's some info on raw nuts

[link to articles.mercola.com]

(snip)

Which Nuts are Healthiest?

You can't really go wrong when choosing nuts to eat, as long as you pay attention to quality. By this I mean look for nuts that are organic and raw, not irradiated or pasteurized (see below for more details). One exception is peanuts, which I typically avoid, and which are technically in the legume family. Along with being one of the most pesticide-laden foods you can eat, most peanuts are also contaminated with aflatoxin, a carcinogenic mold. My favorite nuts are pecans, walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts. Generally speaking, each type of nut will offer a slightly different mix of nutrients for your health. For instance:

Almonds: One of the healthiest aspects of almonds appears to be their skins, as they are rich in antioxidants including phenols, flavonoids and phenolic acids, which are typically associated with vegetables and fruits. As the Almond Board of California reported, a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry even revealed that a one-ounce serving of almonds has a similar amount of total polyphenols as a cup of steamed broccoli or green tea.iv

Walnuts: Walnuts are good sources of plant-based omega-3 fats, natural phytosterols and antioxidants that are so powerful at free-radical scavenging that researchers called them "remarkable."v Plus, walnuts may help reduce not only the risk of prostate cancer, but breast cancer as well.

Pecans: Pecans contain more than 19 vitamins and minerals, and research has shown they may help lower LDL cholesterol and promote healthy arteries.

Brazil Nuts: Brazil nuts are an excellent source of organic selenium, a powerful antioxidant-boosting mineral that may help prevent cancer.
TRUTH.. it's stranger than FICTION..

That's cool. Been eating raw mixed nut, except no peanuts,
everyday for lunch and or snack, for three years or so. Only time I eat something else is dinner every night. I add dried fruit with my raw nut mix. Have almost no fat. I don't like salted nuts. The salt doesn't go with dried fruit very well. Rarely catch a cold or get sick in any way. Good to know they're good for me now.

interesting thing: when I eat raw almonds my throat, mouth, and lips swell up big time, kind of scary. Roasted almonds? Can eat them by the fistfuls and absolutely no swelling or anything. I therefore tend to eat only roasted. I get that scratchy throat thing from raw peanuts, hazelnuts, and walnuts too but to a lesser extent. Does not happen w/ raw pecans though. Weird.
