The Chinese are no doubt hoping Japan will appease them. That is a very dangerous assumption. I predict China will engage in brinksmanship, shots will be fired, and and then China, assuming it has made its point, will withdraw. The same things happened on the Indian, Soviet and Vietnamese borders in years past.

WW1 was due to a series of interlocking treaties that both sides thought the other would ignore, and WW2 was because of Hitler deciding to ignore any and all agreements he'd made.

India and China usually EXCHANGE FIRE in the border, and hey are STILL FRIENDS, and still have diplomatic ties, and still do business.
