Comets in 2014 - Holmes, Linear, Faye, Siding Spring - Will update
I would like to keep this thread through the year 2014. It would be nice if we can collect all the comets and comets yet to be discovered here. If anybody would like to contribute finds I would appreciate it very much hf I will try to update new discoveries regular, as they come in.

Last year I didn't had much look in spotting a comet, Ison was quiet a disappointment :(

But new year, new comets :) Here what can be expected this year:

Comet Holmes (17P/Holmes) - Perihelion Mar 27, 2014, Comet 17P/Holmes shocked astronomers on Oct. 24, 2007, with a spectacular eruption. In less than 24 hours, the 17th magnitude comet brightened by a factor of nearly a million, becoming a naked-eye object in the evening sky

Comet LINEAR (209P / LINEAR) - May 6, 2014, Astronomers confirm that debris from Comet 209P/LINEAR should create a sky show on May 24, 2014

Comet Faye (4P/Faye) - May 29, 2014, will reach perihelion a couple days after Comet Holmes in 2014

Comet Siding Spring (C/2013 A1) - Oct 25, 2014, There is currently a 1 and 120,000 chance that Comet Siding Spring (C/2013 A1) will hit Mars on October 19, 2014

Current visible comets: (only a few, see link for all)
[link to www.aerith.net]

C/2013 R1 ( Lovejoy )
Now it is 6.5 mag (Jan. 12, Marek Biely). In the Northern Hemisphere, it keeps observable in excellent condition for a long time until 2014 autumn when the comet will fade out. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is not be observable from mid November to early February.

C/2013 V3 ( Nevski )
It brightened very rapidly in mid November, from 15 mag to 9 mag only within a week. Now it is bright as 10.7 mag but diffuse (Jan. 4, Carlos Labordena). It seems to keep 10-11 mag for a while after this. It is observable in excellent condition in the Northern Hemisphere. It locates extremely low in the Southern Hemisphere.

C/2012 K1 ( PanSTARRS )
Now it is bright as 12.8 mag (Jan. 7, Taras Prystavski). It is expected to brighten up to 5-6 mag in 2014 autumn. In the Northern Hemisphere, it will be getting higher gradually after this, and it keeps observable in good condition for a long time. It keeps locating low in the Southern Hemisphere.

154P/Brewington
It brightened very rapidly, and brightened up to 10.5 mag from autumn to winter. It is bright as 11.8 mag still now (Dec. 29, J. P. Navarro Pina). It will be fading after this. In the Northern Hemisphere, it keeps observable in excellent condition until May when it becomes fainter than 18 mag. It will not be observable after this in the Southern Hemisphere.

Comet Siding Spring (C/2013 A1)

[link to www.fallofathousandsuns.com]

If the comet does hit Mars, the effect on our neighboring planet will be monumental and it would mark the second time in recorded history that a comet has been observed hitting a planet. The first, and only known observation, was the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter in 1994.

The comet's nucleus is estimated to be between 9 and 31 miles (15 to 50 km) wide. The explosion would release billions of megatons of energy. For reference, the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan at the end of World War II was 0.023 megatons and the 1908 airburst over the Tunguska River in Siberia was 4.0 megatons.

If the comet does miss Mars, Comet Siding Spring will be visible with small telescopes, and even binoculars, in the Southern Hemisphere beginning in the middle of September in 2014.

Update: As it looks, the comet will dodge around mars

Comet 209P / LINEAR

Russian astronomer, Mikhail Maslov, believes Earth will pass through the tail of Comet 209P / LINEAR between 7:00 and 8:00 UT on May 24, 2014. It could result in a meteor storm producing between 100 and 400 meteors an hour. Viewing conditions will be particular good in Canada and the United States.

Astronomers confirm that debris from Comet 209P/LINEAR should create a sky show on May 24, 2014.

Comet Siding Springs is one to watch out for. If it does crash into mars, it would only be the second time something like this is being observed. So nobody is to sure what effects it would have at earth.

Linear should bring a good meteor show, but not sure if it would be viewable in europe

Comet Prospects for 2014

At present 2014 does not offer much for the visual observer in the way of returning periodic comets, with the most interesting one being 209P/LINEAR, which could reach 11th magnitude when it passes 0.06 AU from the earth in May. Two comets at perihelion in 2013 may still be naked eye objects at the beginning of 2014. 2012 K1 (PanSTARRS) may reach 6th magnitude after its August perihelion, but is unfortunately a morning object. Martians will have the spectacle of a Great Comet in October.

Comet Holmes is back? I remember watching it in 2007 and was amazed that it received so little media attention when all you had to do was look up at night and could see how huge it was. Freaked me out blink

Hello Lucy, sorry you missed the comets last year. PANSTARRS (C/2011 L4) was a good one, if your skies were clear enough. Lovejoy (C/2013 R1) is still visible but fading in the morning skies this month. I never bothered trying for ISON as it was never going to be an easy spot for me. This is what I found last year.

Thread: 2013 The the year of the Comet. The ISON number that no one is talking about. Focus on Lovejoy!

Here is the website you need for amateur equipment comet spotting.

That's actually old information, many more observations have been made since then. JPL current rate the probability as outside of 67 sigma, that's a very small number. 6 sigma is less than one in a billion, seven sigma is less than one in 300 billion chance.

There are currently a few comets observable:

C/2013 R1 (Lovejoy): A morning comet visible in binoculars
this comet begins the month in Ophiuchus at magnitude 7.1. Look for a 7' coma. It should fade by about 1.3 magnitudes, moving into Serpens Cauda by month's end

C/2012 X1 (LINEAR): A morning comet visible in small telescopes
This comet begins the month in Ophiuchus at magnitude 8.7. Look for a 4' coma. It should brighten slowly, moving into Aquila by month's end.

C/2012 K1 (PANSTARRS): A morning comet visible in a 6-inch (15 cm) telescope

C/2011 J2 (LINEAR): A northern hemisphere evening comet visible in a 12.5-inch (32 cm) telescope

290P/Jager: An evening comet visible in a 14-inch (36 cm) telescope

C/2013 V3 (Nevski): A morning comet visible in very large telescopes

C/2010 S1 (LINEAR): A morning comet visible in very large telescopes

134P/Kowal-Vavrova: A morning comet visible in very large telescopes
