Comets in 2014 - Holmes, Linear, Faye, Siding Spring - Will update | |
°Lucy° (OP) User ID: 52400167 Germany 01/19/2014 10:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Comet Siding Spring (C/2013 A1) [link to www.fallofathousandsuns.com] If the comet does hit Mars, the effect on our neighboring planet will be monumental and it would mark the second time in recorded history that a comet has been observed hitting a planet. The first, and only known observation, was the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter in 1994. The comet's nucleus is estimated to be between 9 and 31 miles (15 to 50 km) wide. The explosion would release billions of megatons of energy. For reference, the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan at the end of World War II was 0.023 megatons and the 1908 airburst over the Tunguska River in Siberia was 4.0 megatons. If the comet does miss Mars, Comet Siding Spring will be visible with small telescopes, and even binoculars, in the Southern Hemisphere beginning in the middle of September in 2014. Update: As it looks, the comet will dodge around mars Last Edited by °Lucy° on 02/09/2014 04:43 PM "He who people call a fool is not a fool, but he who takes flattery for Truth, is." |
°Lucy° (OP) User ID: 52400167 Germany 01/19/2014 10:22 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Comet 209P / LINEAR Russian astronomer, Mikhail Maslov, believes Earth will pass through the tail of Comet 209P / LINEAR between 7:00 and 8:00 UT on May 24, 2014. It could result in a meteor storm producing between 100 and 400 meteors an hour. Viewing conditions will be particular good in Canada and the United States. Astronomers confirm that debris from Comet 209P/LINEAR should create a sky show on May 24, 2014. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 40458469 Comet Siding Springs is one to watch out for. If it does crash into mars, it would only be the second time something like this is being observed. So nobody is to sure what effects it would have at earth. Linear should bring a good meteor show, but not sure if it would be viewable in europe "He who people call a fool is not a fool, but he who takes flattery for Truth, is." |

°Lucy° (OP) User ID: 52400167 Germany 01/19/2014 12:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | At present 2014 does not offer much for the visual observer in the way of returning periodic comets, with the most interesting one being 209P/LINEAR, which could reach 11th magnitude when it passes 0.06 AU from the earth in May. Two comets at perihelion in 2013 may still be naked eye objects at the beginning of 2014. 2012 K1 (PanSTARRS) may reach 6th magnitude after its August perihelion, but is unfortunately a morning object. Martians will have the spectacle of a Great Comet in October. [link to www.ast.cam.ac.uk] "He who people call a fool is not a fool, but he who takes flattery for Truth, is." |

It would be nice if we can collect all the comets and comets yet to be discovered here. If anybody would like to contribute finds I would appreciate it very much I will try to update new discoveries regular, as they come in. Quoting: °Lucy° Last year I didn't had much look in spotting a comet, Ison was quiet a disappointment :( But new year, new comets :) Here what can be expected this year: Hello Lucy, sorry you missed the comets last year. PANSTARRS (C/2011 L4) was a good one, if your skies were clear enough. Lovejoy (C/2013 R1) is still visible but fading in the morning skies this month. I never bothered trying for ISON as it was never going to be an easy spot for me. This is what I found last year. Thread: 2013 The the year of the Comet. The ISON number that no one is talking about.
