Kids are going back to school, so more outbreaks of just normal colds, flu, stomach bugs will sky rocket for the next 3-4 weeks. This will make any possible Ebola outbreak panic city.
 Quoting: whiteangel

My timeline assumes no effective inoculation.

I also believe there are abilities of this virus that have not been discovered yet.

The 1% Shelter-In-Place threshold I mentioned is for a single individual; if you have a family you may want to shelter earlier.

In other words, if you pass within 3 feet of or touch 100 people per day and one has Ebola, you've just rolled the death dice.

If you have a nice nuclear family, you've rolled that dice four times a day.

The likelihood of getting Ebola from a stranger is minimal - if the average Ebola carrier passes within 3 feet of or touches, say 800 people during their contagious period yet only infects 2 or 3 your chances are 3/800. Assuming you are not a medical professional.
 Quoting: Cheyenne

Yup. It is knowing when to pull the kids out of school BEFORE they are exposed that will be an issue. Heck, I don't even know how to do that legally - last thing any of us want is human services sniffing their noses around your home. Declaring that we are suddenly homeschooling high schoolers....just another thing I need to look into.
 Quoting: whiteangel

There are creative ways of doing this. Homeschooling is one option, saying they are exchange students in Paraguay is yet another. They left to live with their grandparents in Montana...

If this goes pandemic, know well these bureaucrats and enforcers most likely will not survive due to the virus.
 Quoting: Cheyenne

Oh I wouldn't care unless they managed to stop it - yeah right, but since we don't know the future....I would also hate to mess up their future. This is where one would have to make the right decision at the right moment. That is gonna be tricky.

I will have them alive with me - that is for sure!!!

When the infection rate has reached 1% of the US (if it ever does) everyone will know of several victims of the virus due to 2 degrees of separation.

The mindset will be one of panic. You won't be the only one to want to remove your kids from school. A large, several thousand pupil school will have dozens of carriers for the disease at 1% infection rate. They likely will shut down schools at that point.

Yes, panic. Americans don't like to contemplate their own personal death, much less so than other cultures.

At some point the "authorities" will decide to shut down FB and social media as it is a venue of ground-truth information. Perhaps they will blame it on the Syrians, or Iranians, or Russians... the enemy of the day.

What I'm about to write will be controversial for some. But I think it needs to be said and my purpose here is not to offend you.

In the coming months many of us will be tempted to blame our Creator for this disease. I would humbly submit this disease is simply part of our fallen world, thorns and thistles, or could even be man-made.

In that case God had nothing to do with it. Our Creator does allow for free will, even if someone liquidates millions, as in the case of Stalin or Hitler. I do believe in eternal judgement, and you should read about Stalin's last moments of life as he passed into that judgement.

My response? Prepare. If a disease comes my way, I'll prepare the best I can. If a KGB thug comes to take me to the Gulag, I'll be there waiting for him, with prejudice.

Ultimately, it has been said, we are all dead men. It's how we lived our lives that counts, however long or short that life may be.

Monotreme Blog:

Three Ebola Scenatios
[link to monotreme1000.wordpress.com]

1. "Good" Scenario.

Good is in quotes because although this is the best case scenario, a lot of people still suffer and die.

Massive influx of aid from the West decreases the number of new cases in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Contact tracing in Nigeria is effective in limiting spread in that country. New treatments prove effective and are used first for HCWs and then, as supplies increase, for all patients. An effective vaccine becomes available 6 months from now and is used in Africa to end the outbreak. West Africa suffers severe economic hardship and comes close to complete societal breakdown but narrowly escapes this fate.

2. Bad Scenario.

Aid from the West is too little, too late. Although the aid helps some people, the virus continues to spread in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Large numbers of cases show up in the West Point slum in Liberia a few weeks from now. Rioting occurs when soldiers shoot people trying to escape. Men with guns from outside Monrovia move in to "liberate" their kinsmen in West Point. Large numbers of cases are revealed in Lagos in October. Government attempts to hide the full extent of the outbreak in this country fail at this time. Nigerians start to flee to Western countries. A few are infected and start outbreaks in the countries they flee to. These are mostly contained but, as the numbers carrying the virus from Nigeria increase, containment starts to fail as ERs are overwhelmed by sick Nigerians as well as secondary contacts. Effective treatments are available but limited quantities lead to violent arguments over who will receive them. An effective vaccine is identified 6 months from now but is available in insufficient quanitities to do much good. Millions die and the world is plunged into economic Depression. The situation doesn't stabilise until 2016 when there is finally enough vaccine to first slow and then stop the pandemic.

3. Very Bad Scenarios

There are actually several:

A. New Ebola becomes airborne before an effective vaccine can be developed.

B. New Ebola is used by terrorists.

C. It is discovered that New Ebola is a strategic biological weapon.

D. China starts WWIII while the New Ebola pandemic is ravaging the US.

The four Very Bad Scenarios are not mutually exclusive.
 Quoting: NawtyBits

Nawty: great analysis.

My concern has to do with nuclear command / control / surety.

Will another country decide to launch missiles thinking the command and control of a certain world power is broken? Will analysts for the super powers advise for first strike to prevent an attack like this?

Another nuclear issue has to do with our power plants. But that's a another can of worms.

You're absolutely correct. Social media and any unmonitored way of communication would have to controlled. Also you're correct in response to the question about pulling ones children from school. You wouldn't need to fear reprimand from authorities if this thing kicks off here, everyone will be doing the same, and I'd doubt if teachers bothered showing up.

It won't take much to instill panic and disorder after the first few cases, people will become paranoid.

Yuck, freaks me out..

Ebola Patient Discharged is not Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh” – Health Minister

“It has been brought to the attention of the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, that the first Nigerian to be diagnosed of Ebola Virus Disease, a female doctor who treated the index case and who was discharged to go home yesterday, is being reported in some of the media to be one Dr Adadevor.

[link to www.bellanaija.com]

Comment: Even though they try and clarify they don't give any details of the person released or who this other female doctor is. By the first statement they are saying it has to be her based on the titles they gave the person when they described her.

So this could be huge but take it with a wait and see. If anyone can find any other info please post it.

YOU, and only YOU are responsible for maintaining the balance of power between you and the rest of the semi-sentient beings in this world. You cannot disclaim or delegate that responsibility; it is a function of being a living, breathing "adult" in this world. If you can't manage yourself on those terms, someone else *will* manage you on their terms. Your terms are irrelevant. Buy a rifle; prepare to defend yourself. If you don't, what happens is *your* fault. Period.

Dr Ameyo Stella Adedavoh, the Nigerian doctor who first treated Sawyer has died.

She had been discharged from the Centre for Infectious Disease Control at Yaba, Lagos after recovering from Ebola.

So they discharged her as recovered and she died from Ebola.

Comment: Even though they try and clarify they don't give any details of the person released or who this other female doctor is. By the first statement they are saying it has to be her based on the titles they gave the person when they described her.

So this could be huge but take it with a wait and see. If anyone can find any other info please post it.

Way to many conflicting news articles on this one. Usually when it's this conflicting with some good news sources then they are trying to cover it up. Feels that way...

First Nigeria Ebola Virus Survival Dr. Stella Ameyo Adadevoh Discharged (Photo)

"I was not involved in the September 11 attacks in the United States nor did I have knowledge of the attacks. There exists a government within a government within the United States. The United States should try to trace the perpetrators of these attacks within itself; to the people who want to make the present century a century of conflict between Islam and Christianity. That secret government must be asked as to who carried out the attacks. ..." -Osama bin Laden

Numbi said that one of the two cases that tested positive was for the Sudanese strain of the disease, while the other was a mixture between the Sudanese and the Zaire strain - the most lethal variety. The outbreak in West Africa is the Zaire strain.

2 patients fr0m Congo, 2 different strains.

RNA-DNA Virus Hybrid Found

Researchers discovered a virus produced from recombination between RNA and DNA viruses, suggesting a possible new mechanism of virus evolution.

Hot springs at Lassen Volcanic National ParkWIKIMEDIA COMMONS, WALTER SIEGMUND

“It’s a mythological beast of a virus, but it actually exists,” virologist Ken Stedman told Nature of the virus hybrid his team discovered in a volcanic hot spring. Stedman’s team from Portland State University sequenced the DNA genome of the virus, and found that contained sequences encoding proteins from an RNA virus, according to their report published yesterday (April 19) in Biology Direct.

Boiling Springs Lake RNA–DNA hybrid virus (BSL RDHV, for short) is a single-stranded DNA virus with a circular genome, identified in acidic lake samples in Boiling Springs Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park in California. The scientists realized they had something unusual when their characterization of viral sequences turned up the sequence for a protein from an RNA virus—encoded in its DNA. It’s not clear how two unrelated viruses that carry different forms of genetic material combined to form the resulting single-stranded DNA hybrid, as the original RNA virus does not have the reverse transcriptase necessary to translate RNA to DNA.

Does the new HYBRID EBOLA take the RNA from 1 and the DNA from another?
