I caught herpes before I was married. I gave it to my wife since. It's not that big of a deal. We only get outbreaks about once per year.

Believe me it happens. A guy I know was dating a chick for several months before she told him. He got tested and came back negative but from what I've read could have to be tested over the next couple of years as it doesn't always show up immediately.

I have it, and I told my partner, and he never caught it- been almost 5 years together, now. It's good that she told you about it- goes to show you how honest she is.

Herpes is very scary. I think everybody's confused about the different avenues herpes takes to toll the body. Two cases stand out in my mind:

~a childhood friend of mine died of encephalitis/meningitis when she was only 28, married 5 years with a 4 year old daughter and one year old infant son.
Complication of Herpes. Hormones of pregnancy can slam a person with a devastating outbreak as was the case with my pal Patty.
Rumor was she was bitten by a mosquito, but I knew better.
When we were 17 she confided in me that she'd been tossing awhile with a 'fascinating bad boy' who btw infected her with Herpes.

~b Another english friend of mine, married 45 years calls me now and then from CA to tell me she is bedridden and quite ill, the pain up inside from the sore make it too excruciating to function...and she is tough.
She believes she was "born with it" because of outbreaks from a very young age. That births from mothers with Herpes were picked up in the birth canal during that time.

Me, dumb luck to not get hit by that particular train. Lots of other heavy-handed hits from life, but not Herpes.

Get to know this girl better before you put yourself and therefore others at risk. Herpes is highly contagious and once you get it you'll have it for the rest of your life. Find out how you really feel about this girl, looks aren't everything and fade with time, look at her heart and make sure she's a good match for you. At lest she was honest with you, that's a good sign you can trust her. Hold off on sex until you can build a solid foundation of friendship,really get to know what type of person she is, then make a decision if she's worth the risk.
