Brand new hot water tank

That alone has got to be worth 1.2 grand of anybody's money. In fact, I'd say you robbed them, and the only thing you were lacking was a mask and a gun.

Should have went thankless for that price.

Did they at least plumb a trap in the outlet so hot water stays in tank until needed and not heating all pipes just to be cooled

I went with a double trap, that way the hot water stays in the tank until I need it twice as bad.

This must have been with someone else installing it.

If they didn't install a trap, get them back to install it. Its just copper pipe in an upside down "U'.
It traps hot water close to tank.
It gets stuck at the top of the upsidedown U, and doesn't heat all the pipes.
It WILL save a lot on whatever you use to heat the water. Gas/electric.

Its the same thing as a trap under a sink to trap water inside to seal against sewer/septic gasses backflowing into the house.
ALWAYS keep water in toilets.
Run unused sinks and showers once a month to replenish water in the traps.

Man, we got tankless and let me tell you. My gas bill for June was 27.00. What we aren't paying in gas to the gas company has saved us a fortune. The water doesn't get really, really hot in the winter, but it will burn the crap out of you during the summer. It's a trade off, but I wouldn't change a thing.

This is what you should have bought. It never runs out of hot water--even in the winter when you are taking a shower, running the washing machine, and the dishwasher--all at the same time!

You need either better insulation where the ubit heats the water and insulate pipes.
or they sold you an undersized unit.
Better units you can steam crabs with.

Go grab some sausage type anodes and replace every 3-5 years.
the anode is what dictates warranty.
The Rheems I install use three anodes of different types. If anodes are replaced on schedule depending on water quality, you can EASILY expect 30+ years.

They took out Rheems and put in AO Smith.

Well, good luck to you. They don't make things like they used to.

We had no problems with the old hot-water tank that was in the house when we bought it; it lasted 12 years for us, at which point we finally needed a new one.

In the past year there have been two major issues with our new one. BEWARE - When things go wrong the "warranty" all of a sudden does not apply.

No AO Smith is good quality. Shame on you for not getting GLP approval first.

Not at all. Both made to better specs at the same factory.
But make sure to grab the sausage link anodes.
Sausages are easier to put into the tank rather than one long rod where clearance may be an issue.

AO and Rheem don't put their name on junk.


Believe it or not, SEARS used to sell some of the beat water heaters made. Not even sure if they even sell any water heaters now.

GLP needs a technical section.

One more note.

Connect a hose to it and drain it at least twice a year.
This gets rid of the sediment at the bottom and exercises the valve.
Those who never exercise the valve for years find out that once they try to close it, it will always leak. Sometimes it'll stop but not for awhile.

The sediment actually makes the unit less efficient by absorbing the heat from flame and causes the tank to make noise.
Electric units aren't too bad depending on how the heating coils are situated.

WHAT IF your water heater is on a higher level than the plumbing that it is feeding? Does that mean a trap is not needed for the same effect?
