We have had torrential rains today and yesterday. My backyard had a large river running through it, the likes of which I never seen before!

If you get enough rain, things collapse, and a bridge through sand is going to collapse easier than most.

The road was built fine, but shit happens!

No it's not. Interstate 90 is the longest. From Boston to Seattle- 3,099 miles. I-10 is 2,460 miles. Just FYI.

Heavy rainfall has flooded all lanes of traffic on California's Interstate 5 and eastbound Interstate 210.

Also... collapsing bridges aren't that surprising because overall, the infrastructure across the nation is SHIT. I travel across the country every day and see it first hand.

I blame the rapture. There were some Christian bums living UNDER the bridge.

I've been getting flash flood warnings all afternoon. I think one was for the 5.

The rain has been coming down hard on and off for two days.

I've been thinking of giving up bridges wherever possible, but not to the extent that I would not drive to a vacation spot or cause myself double the drive time to work. For grocery shopping and going to the gym and the movies, etc., there are other routes that don't take that much longer. I have a relative who is a structural engineer, and I have been unfortunately exposed to all sorts of bad bridge stories. I really hate all bridges.

I gave up elevators years ago and never looked back. It is freaky to think I was atop the WTC as a kid, and just a few years ago I was atop the Empire State Building which sways like crazy.

Has anyone been on that crazy old bridge in Charleston, SC? They built a new one right next to it. The old one has hills and valleys. It's like a thrill ride. It's been a while since I've been there so I don't know if they every got rid of it or not. Watch the Mothman Prophecies if you like weird (and tragic) bridge stories.

This bridge was designated as "structurally obsolete" in 2014(?). Bridge in bad shape, downpour, massive drought, it's going to be a little crazy in Cali.

No doubt, it is bleak out there. But big big trucking highway and route in and out of Southwest. Interesting....

The collapsed bridge, the Tex Wash bridge a half mile east of Eagle Mount Road, was listed as functionally obsolete in the 2014 National Bridge Inventory.
Built in 1967, the bridge was considered no longer adequate for its task. However, it was not listed as having known structural problems that needed to be fixed.

The freeway is the main route between Los Angeles and Phoenix. On average, 24,000 cars drive by Eagle Mountain Road on I-10 a day, according to the Caltrans 2014 Traffic Volumes on the California State Highway System.

That's 24,000 drivers who will have to reroute Monday.
