After they left Missouri they went to Illinois. In Illinois the locals burned the entire town to the ground (it was called nauvoo) and burned the temple to the ground. They then went west and effectively left the us. The area west of Illinois and Missouri wasn't an official state. They went to Nebraska for awhile and didn't have problems (it wasn't populated mainly) and eventually kept going west and ended up in Utah and other parts of the country west of Utah. Lots of people just flat out froze to death in the flight from Illinois. This was the handcart period, no cars or anything like that existed.

Interesting factoid-the state they established was originally called Deseret. It stretched all the way from Utah/Wyoming to east of the sierras in the Central Valley of ca down to San Diego. The Mormons wanted to join the us and as a condition of joining the country they had to give most of that land to other groups and shrink the state. Most people like to call them a Utah cult but they actually settled a very large portion of the west, especially Nevada, parts of Sacramento and Wyoming, Idaho etc.
