~~~About This California Superstorm~~~
So just wanted to mention a few positives regarding this cray-cray storm coming in...
It's a relief knowing this thing isn't:
1) Near a huge faultline overdue for a massive earthquake
[link to www.theweathernetwork.com (secure)]
2) Coming into an area wherein there has been an extended drought since there is evidence to suggest massive amounts of rainfall can trigger earthquakes in such circumstances
Oh wait...
Damned
Was thinking the same thing OP.
They're estimating around 2 Trillion gallons of rain in Cali from this.
At 8 pounds a gallon, that's 16 Trillion pounds of extra weight on un-lubed creaky dried out faults.
Be wary of full dams when any earthquakes hit. H2O very heavy.
That should be enough weight to break the mantle and all sorts of plates, right?
I just had a vision California is going to break off and sink into the Pacific.
I was somewhat generalizing, but yes, technically that is correct. Doesn't reduce the short term doom probabilities though...
There is also some evidence to suggest that when reservoirs fill or drain rapidly, the change in mass can trigger earthquakes.
There will definitely be some rapidly filling reservoirs over the next few days.
