Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire, the first of three fatal NASA accidents which all occurred within a few days of each on the calendar, from January 27th to February 1st. Today, NASA is opening a proper memorial for the Apollo 1 crew featuring the hatch of the scorched spacecraft.

The hatch's design prevented the crew from being able to open it rapidly, trapping them inside the burning spacecraft and sealing it shut as the atmospheric pressure inside increased faster than the pressure vent system could vent, even if Grissom had been able to reach the vent valve. It was thought to be safer to design the hatch so that it couldn't open if the internal pressure was significantly greater than the external pressure, and NASA had rejected plans for explosive bolts to blow the hatch in the event of an emergency, largely because of the premature hatch firing during the end of Grissom's own Mercury mission. The crew rapidly suffocated to death due to these design decisions.

I've been told that in a few minutes at 11 am eastern, NASA will be unveiling the memorial in a ceremony on NASA TV.

Today, Launch Complex 34 where the accident occurred is just an abandoned bit of concrete and pipes. Most of the pad itself is gone, just the foundational stand is left. It is a ghostly place, a sad reminder of one of NASA's tragic accidents in spaceflight.

If all of that is true then why have no engineers, technicians, contractors, astronauts, their families, etc.. EVER come forward to talk about the moon landings being fake ?

That alone tells me that the moon landings were real.

Delusional BS is right. My dad worked on the landing, specifically the lunar lander. Thousands of people worked on the program for years. We went to the moon. The only people who think we didn't are fringe idiots.

Since the 31st anniversary of Challenger is tomorrow I have to go back and remember how ambitious the shuttle program was originally intended to be.

NASA intended to launch the shuttle every 10-14 days. At one point they thought they could have (100) launches a year. In fact, they thought that the thing was nearly "maintenance free" and that it would basically be a "space trucker service" for hauling satellites back and forth.

Of course, that was all a pipe dream. The most launched in a year was (9) back in 1985.

In fact, they were playing so fast and loose with the safety protocol that they were damn lucky they didn't lose one before Challenger - and they were also damn lucky to have only lost the one on liftoff. There were a couple of occasions in which the damn thing could have blown up on the pad.

That said, the shuttle program should never have been ended by that idiot Obama. The thing could have - and should have - continued to fly indefinitely until a replacement manned vehicle was ready at the very least...
