Re: BOOK SUGGESTIONS NEEDED: Anything on the inner workings of local/state/fed law enforcement and the fbi in tracking down serial killers
I'm doing research to write my first crime / thriller and outside of what I've seen portrayed in films and a few tv shows (criminal minds, hannibal, etc) I really don't know much of the process and I do not want my detective/officer/agents seeming too flat and one dimensional in my story. I'm looking for non fiction to stay as true to life as possible but I'm open to fictional novels, films or television series if they have pretty accurate portrayals.

Try the Gift Of Fear by Gavin BeBecker. Great insight into the human psych and bascally a handbook for figuring out serial killers, rapists, ect.

Also Vernon Gerbeck, Homicide Investigations book. Literally the Bible for death investigations to homicide investigators. Any real police detective, especially in larger departments would have this book as their reference and likely on the desk.

I know, I am one....

Thank you SO much, AC! And thank you so much for all the work you do as well. That is just the type of thing I was looking for so it is deeply appreciated.

Dead Men Do Tell Tales - read it when I was studying to be a forensic anthropologist. Very interesting.

Here's a good link to great forensic books.

go home narc.

go all the way home. no fiddy dollars for you today, narc.

I need some references for inner workings....

go jump a fence and get it yourself. tiptoe across the grass lawn of the FBI educational center with your bag, break into a room of one of the students' rooms, try to find some books. Hm...constitutional law, stick that in your bag. Hm.... advanced forensic procedures, stick that in your bag. Fingerprinting for dummies? Okay stick that in your bag. How to get laid in 3 days or less? What the hell? Okay stick that in your bag.

Hurry up run away before the students come back from their PT training. Back out the window, tiptoe across the lawn, jump the fence.

Inner workings.

Oh it's easy. They put a hubcap on a post and the person who takes it might be a killer.

Try "Whoever Fights Monsters"

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

"Face-to-face with some of America's most terrifying killers, FBI veteran and ex-Army CID colonel Robert Ressler learned from them how to identify the unknown monsters who walk among us--and put them behind bars. Now the man who coined the phrase "serial killer" and advised Thomas Harris on The Silence of the Lambs shows how he is able to track down some of today's most brutal murderers.''

...Really great read!

These are typically satanic rituals so something on that.

Nothing works in reality like people think it does. Your choices are the person is "programmed" to do it and/or it has an entity inside it doing it.

No, I'm not absolving responsibility I'm saying they (someone inside the agencies) know exactly who's doing it and before they do it.

Read their webpage. They don't care about catching serial killers. Probably because most of them are in law enforcement like arsonists who join the fire department.

Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John Douglas is quite interesting.

It's about the start of profiling as a tool. Soon to be a TV series.

Have you decided on the time period you wish to set it in? I can tell you there were some crazy things going on in n.y.c during the 70s and 80s and obviously LA\California as well.

it is time period specific since the character will be very much effected by the decade\decades he\she was active.
