By Lynn Winthrop, Lufkin Daily News

LUFKIN, Texas -- Local animal experts are having a hard time identifying a strange looking animal killed in Angelina County on Friday -- an animal that looks eerily similar to the as yet unidentified "Elmendorf Beast" killed near San Antonio earlier this year.

"What is that?" are the first words out of anyoneīs mouth when shown photos of the animal, according to Stacy Womack.

Womack -- who has more than 20 years experience working at Ellen Trout Zoo and for a local veterinarian -- said sheīs seen and handled a lot of different animals, but that sheīs never seen anything like this one.

"Itīs not a dog," she said. "Iīd bet my lottery ticket on that."

The animalīs blue-grey skin is almost hairless and appears to be covered with mange. A closer look at the animalīs jaw line reveals a serious overbite and four huge canine teeth, and a long, rat-like tail curls behind the animalīs emaciated frame.

The animal was shot and killed shortly before noon Friday after crawling under her motherīs house in Pollok. Womack said large dogs in the yard "went nuts" and alerted the family, but would only whine and wouldnīt go under the house with the animal. Her brother shot the animal, tied a rope around it and dragged it out from under the house for a closer look, she said.

Womack was called to take a photograph of the animal, and possibly help identify it, as well. A live animal, just like the one in the picture, darted across the road in front of her car while she was driving to the scene.

When she arrived with her camera and expertise in tow, Womack said she almost couldnīt believe what she was looking at.

"It was so necrotic, its tissue was just rotted," Womack said. "It had no hair, a severe overbite and its claws were entirely too long for a dog."

She said the animalīs front legs were much smaller than itīs hind legs, and that despite itīs overall ghoulish appearance, itīs extremely long canine teeth were in excellent condition. Also, despite having been shot, there was virtually no blood seeping from the animalīs carcass. The animalīs ear also "broke like a cookie" when itīs head was held up for a photograph, she said

"Itīs body looked like something that has been dead for a month or so," Womack said. "Like I said, Iīve worked in the veterinary field for more than 20 years and Iīve never seen anything that bad."

The animal was male and weighed between 15 and 20 pounds, she said. The identical animal that sprinted across the road ran with itīs head down and itīs tail between itīs legs, according to Womack, but wasnīt tall enough to be a coyote or a wolf. She said the live animal is probably the dead oneīs mate.

"I would just like to see somebody go out there and try to trap the other one," Womack said. "Because itīs in misery, too, and what if it gets into the population?"

Womack showed pictures of the animal to a Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden, who "totally freaked out" and called for a department biologist, she said. The biologist told her it was likely a coyote with mange, but wasnīt able to match the animalīs skull shape -- and overbite -- with pictures of coyotes in reference books, according to Womack.

Pictures were also dropped off at the Texas Animal Health Commission, where the veterinarian was out of the office and hadnīt contacted Womack as of Tuesday afternoon. She said a biologist was on the way to Pollok to collect a tissue sample of the animal, for DNA testing.

"I just want people to be aware that things like this happen," Womack said. "If itīs not the mange, itīs something that doesnīt need to be in the environment."

C.R. Shilling, of the West Loop Animal Clinic in Lufkin said that after seeing pictures of the animal -- and stressing that his determination is "pure speculation" -- he believes the animal is probably a coyote. The animal likely suffers from demodex mange, he said, and possibly a secondary skin infection or even a congenital skin defect, as well.

"Thatīs just a congenital defect," Shilling said when asked about the animalīs unusual jaw configuration. "Weīll even get dogs like that in here."

Shilling said that without seeing the animal itself, itīs hard to make an exact determination of what the animal might be. The possibility of it being a dog/coyote mix would be "unusual, but possible," he said.

"It appears to be an extremely undernourished dog," Ellen Trout Zoo Director Gordon Henley said after being e-mailed several photos of the animal. "Wild animals donīt typically wind up like that, but undernourished, neglected, domestic animals do."

After enlarging one of the photos and conferring with the zooīs veterinarian, Henley said he feels the animalīs mangy, crusty skin could be a result of either neglect or living in the wild. Undernourishment or a congenital deformity could have caused the animalīs gross overbite, he said.

"I think what weīve got here is a poor, suffering, undernourished and possibly abused canid," Henley said. "Possibly a coyote, but more likely a dog."

WOAI-TV in San Antonio has aired several stories on the so-called "Elmendorf Beast" since a nearby rancher shot and killed one earlier this year. The animal depicted on the stationīs Web site, at www.woai.com, looks eerily similar to the one discovered in Pollok.

The rancher from Elmendorf, located southeast of San Antonio, killed the animal after 35 of his chickens disappeared in one day. The animal was also almost hairless, with blue-grey coloring and four large "fangs." The station reported that tissue from the animal has been sent for DNA testing, and that it will be several more weeks before the tests are completed.

Speculation in the area as to what type of the animal the rancher killed has varied from simple to mystical. Some say itīs a wild Mexican hairless dog, and other than the skin condition and jaw, pictures of the breed do bear a resemblance. Others believe itīs the mythical chupacabra -- or "goat sucker" -- an animal Mexican folklorists say stalks rural areas killing livestock.

One area hunting guide even believed the animal might be a muntjac, a small antelope-type animal imported into the state by ranchers, according to the stationīs online reports. Muntjac are herbivores, but do have upper canine teeth that are elongated into "tusks" that curve outward from the lips. Muntjac are also called "barking deer" for a sound theyīll emit to warn others of predators.

Like most deer, however, the Muntjac have split hoofs instead of paws, and certainly donīt have long, rat-like tails.

A San Antonio Zoo mammal expert told WOAI-TV the animal is clearly a member of the canine family, and could possibly be a mix between a dog and a coyote. The expert also said the animal was clearly suffering from some sort of skin ailment, and may also have a congenital deformity of some sort.

Sightings of similar animals have been reported across the country, from California to Maryland.

I think some of these things are government lab-bred genetic freaks.

Maybe some of them have extraterrestrial DNA.

They set loose a few breeding pairs into the wild to see how they adapt.

Maybe cloned species decay at a more rapid rate than non-clones. Less residual evidence.

Figures theyīd start showing up in Texas.

You give your doubting agreement with extreme rapidity.

Looking at so-called classic descriptions of El Chupacabra from Mexico and Central America, Iīd say the animal in the pictures bares a striking resemblance to descriptions that villagers in Mexico have given for the Goat Sucker.

The pictures in the article link provided are, frankly, disconcerting. This animal looks like nothing that Iīm familiar with in North America. Itīs dental structure is freakish.

Two within a few months, and reports of a third one at the scene? Chupacabra may be on the edge of receiving recognition by science.

This is the description of the Chupas that Iīm familiar with.

>>Chupacabra means Goat Sucker. This Creature was reported to have been seen throughout the Caribbean, several countries of South America and even in Florida. It has been reported that this creature kills animals by sucking all the blood from them. There have been found many dead goats and farm animals throughout these countries. These animals where found with puncture wounds around there neck. Some have reported that the creature is alien in origin and that UFOđs have brought them to us. Other say that they are creatures created by the government.

Chupacabras have reportedly killed thousands of animals in Puerto Rican and the United States. Dozens of people have claimed to have seen this animal.

Chupacabras are described as about four feet tall when standing errect, have huge red elongated eyes, grey skin that is part fur and part feathers, short arms with claws, legs like a kangaroo, and a line of sharp spikes down the middle of itīs back. They are supposedly very powerful animals. Some report that the chupakabras have wings and can fly. <<

Well, the eyes do appear elongated. The bare skin is described as bluish grey. No feathers mentioned. Claws are visible in the picture. Also it does resemble a kangeroo in many ways. No sharp spikes down the back...but this might have been misidentification of another cause. Hair running down the back might look like spikes to someone who only catches a brief glimpse.

ZetaTalk: Chupacabra Remnants
written Oct 15, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have stated when the Chupacabra reports first emerged that these creatures were Akin to the dragons or vampire bats of old, brought to Earth to terrify humans by those in the Service-to-Self, looking to increase their harvest of recruits. Fear, terror, increase a self focus, and thus is a tool used by those in the Service-to-Self to drive young souls in this direction. In the past dumb creatures used to this end, brought to Earth and unleashed on villages, eventually died out, as they are not native to the Earth and suffer from infections and inadequate nutrition. What does the recent discovery of dead Chupacabra, young and starving, in Maryland and Texas, mean? It means their handlers have fled, and are no longer attempting to capture the continent of S. America, as was the case when the Chupacabra episode began. The Council of Worlds required that the handlers, the Service-to-Self aliens unleashing them, ensure that humans not be harmed by the Chupacabra unless in essence giving permission, the human always in control of the situation. Thus, these aliens attended their dogs of war faithfully, as failure to do so would send them packing, forced to leave the Earth for failure to abide by the rules. But if leaving anyway, the Service-to-Self, not known for their concern for the environment or having any sense of responsibility, would scarcely scout about to collect all the young their charges might have spawned. Thus they show up, infected and suffering from malnutrition, unidentifiable as a known species on Earth, puzzling those who come upon their remains.

Brazil, Aug. 3, 1997
Curiously enough, all of the attacks took place in barns or sheds or pens that were securely locked.

Puerto Rico, 1999
The enigmatic creature can best be described as a cross between one of the"Grey" aliens and a terrestrial animal such as a porcupine or a kangaroo due to the presence of quill-like appendages running down its back and enormously powerful hind legs which enable it to leap over trees in a single bound.

Chille, May 11, 2000
It stood about 1.5 meters (four feet) tall, like a big monkey, with long clawed arms, enormous fangs protruding from its mouth, as well as a pair of wings.

Nicaragua, 2000
The dog-sized creature had a bull-like head and small feet. Gioconda Chevez, a zoologist who examined it, told the newspapers that the creature had smooth skin like that of a bat, long claws and a crocodile-like crest running down its back.

It looks like a hairless dog. There are jaw and dentition abnormalities that are associated with the hairless mutation. Breeders of these animals always cross a hairless dog with a coated dog of the same breed, because when you breed hairless to hairless, you double up on some of the traits associated with the hairless mutation, and end up with a percentage of lethal congenital conditions. Or maybe we have the hairless mutation popping up in coyotes? In any case, interesting that they are showing up in multiple places... hmmmm...

Re: Dead Chupacabra Found In Texas? - Photos
Actually this poor creature does not fit the Chupacabra descriptions or behavior that I have read about.
Most descriptions from Latin American sightings describe the creatures as more feline, rather than canine.
They are described as being extremely stealthy and are rarely sighted, (unlike these creatures which appear to be roaming about in daylight.)
Also the livestock damage reported in relation to Chupacabra attacks does not sound like what the Texas farmers are describing.

What concerns me about these creatures is the comment made by one of the biologists in regard to a similar creature - "the Elmendorf Beast" - found in Texas in August:

"When the rancher took the skull to experts at the San Antonio Zoo, biologists could not identify it. The zooīs Terry DeRosa thinks "It may be one of the hairless dogs that perhaps you see in Mexico." Some experts who have observed photos of the corpse feel that the animal was afflicted by sarcoptic mange, and had not originally been hairless.

This expert (Terry DeRosa) says, "I believe that this animalīs condition represents some sort of unrecognized environmental catastrophe. Other small predators with sarcoptic mange have been observed elsewhere in the country recently. It needs urgent study."
( [link to www.unknowncountry.com]

The above explanation - of an environmental catastrophe - seems to be the most probable.

It appears very likely that these creatures are exhibiting a combination of mutation as well as severe pathologies possibly resulting from long-term exposure to some environmental toxins, i.e. radiation and/or chemicals.

I remember a while back, someone on this forum, (I think it might have been Susan), mentioning an area of Texas that they wouldnīt go anywhere near, but they did not elaborate.
I think it might have been in a national park area, or some historical site where there have been strange goings-on (UFO sightings?), and people who have been in the area have returned exhibiting illnesses which sound a lot like possible radiation sickness.

Possibly these creatures have emerged from such an area.
They seem to be extremely pathetic, miserable creatures, and I hate to think what could be happening to other animals (and humans) in such an area.

Does anyone know of such a place in Texas?
If so, could you elaborate on what you know about it, and what has happened to people who have gone there?

And a dreadful thing from the cliff did spring,
And its wild bark thrillīd around,
His eyes had the glow of the fires below,

Black Shuck - Norfolkīs Hell Hound

There are so many myths, tales, legends and sightingīs of this fearsome apparition that it is hard to know where to begin.

Black Shuck is said to be one of the oldest phantoms of Great Britain, with the name deriving from the Anglo-Saxon word īscuccaī meaning demon or devil.

Other historians say that the hound has its origins in Norse mythology based on the huge dog of war of Odin and Thor īShukirī who came over to Britain thousands of years ago along with the Vikings long-ships.

Local legend tells of a huge hound, the size of a small calf with blazing eyes, who regularly prowls the coastal path  between Sheringham and Overstrand.

Unsuspecting night walkers will first become aware of sound of the hounds heavy paws.

Out of the corner of their eye they may see a gathering darkness, which slowly forms into the outline of a huge hound.

Lurking in the night shadows the beast is said to track the steps of its victim, drawing ever closer.

Anyone unfortunate enough to turn around and meet its fiery gaze is said to die within a twelve month period.

The hell hound of Norfolk has had many documented sighting.  In 1890 a young boy was rescued from the North Sea who told a tale of being forced to swim further and further from the shore by a huge black dog who had chased him into the sea.

Even during the 1920īs and 1930īs there were reports from the fishermen of Sheringham of hearing a hound howling on the cliff tops during stormy nights. As recently as 1970 a sighting of Black Shuck made the headlines.

When a huge hound was seen pounding over the beach at Great Yarmouth. 1980, a young woman claimed to have met the hell hound, whilst out walking with her young son. This sighting took place near Wisbeach, though the woman said that this hound had yellow eyes, rather than red, but all of the other details were the same as that of Black Shuck.

In the village of Overstrand the old Village Sign used to show a picture of the legendary Black Shuck and to this day there is still a lane in the village which is called locally after the Norfolk hell hound.

Another of the hounds tracks runs through what today is Mill Lane into the grounds of Cromer Hall.  It is said that it was this particular locality which Arthur Conan Doyle based his Hound of the Baskervilles on.

Mythology says that īghost dogsī tend to haunt old straight roads which may be located on īLeylinesī.

Leylines are ancient straight paths of invisible earth energy.  Folklore says that churches would be sited on these straight lines and would be used by spirits who would travel along them from graveyard to graveyard and they were sometimes known as īCorpse Waysī.

We are unable to confirm if this Norfolk hound does or does not exist.  We have been told many a tale, over a pint, on a cold and windy moonless night in a Norfolk pub, when an extra log is thrown on the fire.

Unfortunately we have yet to find a Norfolk coast team member who is prepared to go out and look for it.....
