bitcoins are backed by the collective network of computers that support the block chain. if all the bitcoin clients and miners turned off their hardware / mining pools / BTC clients tomorrow, then BTC would become worthless. That will never happen though. And the thing is no one can override the network introduce new software changes to increase the number of BTC coins or increase the payouts without everyone on the network agreeing. Its not like a government that can unilaterally decide to print more currency. There will always be a limited supply of BTC - and that is its high demand. There are trillions of dollars, euros, yuan, etc...looking to preserve value among other things. I only have a few more than a handful. Its tough to see it at $2500 and say 'its too expensive to jump in'. I don't envy you. But I plan on holding. I might decide to add $100 a month or so at this point. Maybe at the next dip.
