Orwell focused on the lives of the party members, not the proles. if music with meanings which are antithetical to the party is still present in prole society, as shown by the laundry-hanging woman singing about hope and dreams, it is possible that religion still survives amongst non-party members as well, just not mentioned.

i always thought goldstein's book would have been more akin to Common Sense by Thomas Paine rather than the bible, but maybe you're onto something I hadn't thought of.

Orwell was not a prophet.

He was associated with some of the men that were already planning the future of the One World Government Mordor way back in the 1940's

1984 and Animal Farm was his way of revealing their plans without coming out and saying it directly (which would have gotten him killed).
