Re: Does cancer have a certain smell?
The reason that I ask is because I've noticed lately that my husband has a different type of smell. It's as if his body chemistry has changed or something. I can't really describe the smell, but I'm hoping that one of you know what I'm talking about.

according to dogs that have been trained to detect cancer yes, yes it does have a particular smell, I don’t know if we can smell it though, I don’t imagine we can.

A have a similar concern. My husband has always had a mild, pleasant natural body smell and rarely smelled strongly of BO even when he'd been working hard physically but recently his skin - not just armpits etc but his arms and back and chest - his entire body - smells strongly. The best description I have is of something like scorched linen + urine - as if fabric was soaked in urine and then ironed with a too-hot iron so that the fabric scorches. Even though I find the odour suffocating, he cannot smell it.
He has recently started taking medication to ensure his blood pressure stays low.

Ok, I will try to describe it. It's like a "very strong" smelling "sour milk" type of smell. It's hard to describe.
 Quoting: Concerned 456627

maybe his body is too acid. have him eat more fruits and veggies maybe. he could also take some baking soda each day and see if that helps. he can start with a 1/2 teaspoon before bed. and have him drink half is body weight in ounces of water each day.

Ammonia
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 436789

Thats diabetes. Ammonia is often detected when someone goes into diabetic ketoacidosis.

You can also smell this if someone is low carb dieting and they go into ketosis.

Cancer smells like a sweet sour smell. It is definite. I can tell if someone has cancer by their smell. It used to help me when I worked in the ED for many years. I could smell the cancer on them.

Re: Does cancer have a certain smell?
Hahaha you can't SMELL cancer. LMFAO

Do you even know what cancer is?? It is a growth INSIDE the body. It doesn't affect the way the body smells since it has nothing to do with the skin. The reason why you get BO is because of bacteria feeding off the sweat on your body, and it makes you smell bad. Cancer has nothing to do with that.

Re: Does cancer have a certain smell?
This thread is scarring me some what. In the last month or so I've had pain on and off in my abdominal area and have noticed a different odor in my urine and a different taste in my mouth in the morning when I wake up. My dog also always follows me to the bathroom when I have to go and tries to smell me during and I push him away. Even when I close the door, my dog hits it with his paws and barks for me to let him in. It's annoying.

I better go to the doctor and get checked out.

Re: Does cancer have a certain smell?
I HAVE READ MOST OF THE RESPONSES, MOST OF WHICH DID NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION. THE ANSWER SHOULD BE EITHER YES OR NO WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE SMELL IF THE ANSWER IS YES. I WOULD LIKE TO THINK THAT THERE IS A SMELL AND SOME SCIENTISTS SHOULD GATHER UP CANCER TISSUE FROM PATIENTS AND CHECK FOR IT. IF DOGS CAN SMELL FOR IT, THERE'S SOMETHING TO THE IDEA.
STOP BRUSHING OFF THE QUESTIONS WITH SUGGESTIONS ABOUT CLEANLINESS OR DIET.

Re: Does cancer have a certain smell?
My husband was ill with cancer for a year. He passed away at end of June 2011, but I started noticing the sickly sweet smell in the living room (where he spent nearly the entire last year of his life).

My sons and I cleaned up the living room somewhat, and we moved the furniture around, so maybe it wouldn't be so upsetting to sit in there. I was picking things up there tonight (4 months later) and different areas of the living room are still giving off that sickly sweet smell.

The odor throws me back to my husband's illness. But he's passed now for 4 months.

Re: Does cancer have a certain smell?
4 years ago my husband's breath was horrible - I couldn't even face him at night when we slept because of the odor - he not only brushed his teeth, he used peroxide, then brushed, flossed, water pic and then mouthwash - so it definitely wasn't from lack of hygiene - he went to the doctor - just for a checkup - turned out he had prostate cancer. I didn't really put it together at all - however after his surgery to remove his prostate - I noticed his breath was fine. He hadn't changed how he took care of his teeth at all...

Now I have been spending time at my mother’s - all of a sudden her house has an odor I can hardly stand House is clean, she is clean - but the smell is awful. My husband was there and couldn't smell anything. She has had cancer twice - and I am concerned she has it again. It isn't to me a sickly sweet smell though - I can't even describe it - but it makes me want to gag...

Anyone else have that experience?

DIDN'T read any of the replies, BUT, there was a post here years ago that dogs can smell it. They had a dog that did this, in a lab setting, if I recall, so not just idle claims.

Re: Does cancer have a certain smell?
An absessed tooth can have this smell !
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 456672

Oh thank god, I've been noticing a funny smell in my room and just made a thread asking if an abscess tooth prevents a stench in a room that lingers. Here's the text from the thread and a bump to further discuss:

"After leaving my room and returning several hours later, I noticed a strange scent. I can tell its not stale marijuana smoke, I can tell its not my normal BO smell...it smells weird.

I'm a bit scared since it kind of reminds me of the hospital or old person smell. It's like, strong yet also subtle. Almost as if you won't instantly notice it but when you do it won't leave your mind. It isn't horrifically offensive....but it definitely smells OFF and not normal.

I also have been fighting a major tooth abscess / mouth infection, and am wondering if a tooth abscess produces a similar chemical reaction in the body to produce these smells. It would be a logical assumption, but thought I'd double check with a bunch of trolls and healthtards like yourselves"
yes,it does...

Re: Does cancer have a certain smell?
At least to me it does... my mother died from it and now I smell it on myself. I also have it, i noticed the smell before I knew.

It smells like wet, dirty socks...best way to describe.

Sorry for sounding so gross, but cancer isn't pretty. It's a sickening smell that wont go away no matter how often I shower..the smell returns as if seeping out of your skin like sweat..it's stuck in your nose,,it stinks to be quite frank.

Cancer stinks. In more ways than one. I olny hope those around me do not have to smell what I do.. I hope they don't but maybe they are just being polite.

diabetes is the first thing that comes to my mind. He should be checked out by a doc. A lot of diabetic patients have that smell about them when their diabetes is unchecked.

I know exactly what you are saying. My husband snores a lot and I am a light sleeper so he sleeps in another room with his old dog. I started noticing a bad smell coming out of that room, rotting smell. I thought it was the dog but I think it might be him. He had a cancerous growth removed from his eye a year ago. I am worried it has spread. He has abdominal pain, shoulder pain, seems like every day is a new pain but he won't go to the dr. It's very frustrating and I feel helpless. When I suggest he goes to the dr he makes a snide remard like (you want me to be sick) or some other stupid comment and then I let it go. His personality has also changes and he is less loving and distant. It's very hurtful and I am suffering too.

Re: Does cancer have a certain smell?
My Mom has lung cancer, she mentioned the other day that she could smell the same smell as she smelled on my step dad when he was dying of lung cancer years ago. I assured her she didn't smell. Today while we were in the waiting room at her doctor's office she suddenly said to me, "don't you smell it... that chemical smell?". After a minute or so I did. And then I really did! It was sickening. Then I could not stop smelling it. It was nauseatingly strong.

I tried and tried to think of how I would describe it while we were driving to the hospital for lab work and all the way back home. I could not come up with a satisfactory description for what it is, but it is sickening and maybe chemically, and B.O.ish, and an ashy smell, and maybe a bit maple syrup like. None of those are really good descriptions but I could see how this would linger in a room, furniture or memory long after a person's death.

I would know this smell now if I smelled it again on someone else.

Re: Does cancer have a certain smell?
cancer is just a lump cells. perhaps if a person had a serious melanoma which had become infected, an infectous smell might eminate from the wound. a person's smell has more to do with diet than anything else. most white middle aged guys smell like fried onions, alot like a cheessteak.

doesn't mean they have cancer.
