Barbour said taking those dollars would force his state to eventually raise taxes when the stimulus money runs out, putting in place what he called an unfair tax on employers. "There is some (money) we will not take in Mississippi. ... We want more jobs. You don't get more jobs by putting an extra tax on creating jobs," Barbour told CNN's "State of the Union' on Sunday. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a Republican, said he's going to take the money his state is entitled to receive because it was his constituents who sent it to Washington in the first place. "In Minnesota's case, we are a major net subsidizer of the federal government, and that's unlike some other states. For every dollar we send in, we only get 72 cents back. So we're paying the bill either way. We're going to take our share of the money," he said, adding that his state won't be hurt by requirements on unemployment benefits because those rules have already been in place for years. And if my colleagues here in Minnesota and South Carolina don't get -- don't use theirs, I'm going to be first in line to say for my people, for our citizens, to put people to work and to make sure that they can survive through this, I'll take their dollars, too." That federal money not only pays for unemployment benefits but it pays for the Employment Centers and Counselors, re-education and job programs. So, basically they will be laying off EVEN MORE people in their states, as well as cutting people off from very basic neccessities...like FOOD... and no money to pay for them. They better wake the f@#k up. The riots will start their first. |

You know, the poorest states in the union that, on average, accept more federal support than they produce in taxes and so on. I'm wondering how all of the poor, the minorities, the unemployed, or those receiving a 3rd world education feel about the decisions being made by their privileged/white elected officials. |

Sure, we are all angry at the feds. But it will be a cold day in hell before I march through the streets to support conservative dimwits who have voted on "moral" issues for the last 20 years. Not much talk of gay marriage, stem cell research, of flag burning now. Also appears that most have taken the "support our troops" stickers off their minivan. They simply have no ground to stand on. Just more of the same. They would rather stick it to Obama and do anything possible to, as they confess to, see him fail. The rest of us simply do not matter. Sorry, I cannot take to the streets for their cause. |

Get it yet? Do you like being pushed around or made to do something you know will cause damage in the long run? The states have the right to refuse the money. I would also knowing that the state would have to change the laws on part time employees. Quoting: Nailer45Yes. As an American, this has happened my entire life. As a Californian, we were told we could not raise our emissions standards, even though we all know that not doing so causes damage in the long run. I remember as a social worker, having to take children from their parents because they smoked marijuana, only to have the kids molested in a group home, homeless, in prison themselves. I remember as a probation officer, sending countless youngsters to jail for simply providing dirty drug tests, knowing that what I was doing was only making their problems worse. I remember having to support the war in Iraq out of fear of being called unpatriotic, even though I knew it was wrong. I'm sorry, very poor argument. |

If more people would wake up and see the truth . The states need to become more independant and tell the Government to screw off . Just as we the people need to do also, get rid of the lifetime membership to welfare and earn our keep and be responsible for ourselves and our actions. there will be rough times for all aspecially over the next year or until the USA collapses. Remember not everyone is bad and neighbors do still help each other out and local communities pull together and can accomplish feats thought impossible. There is NO difference between Repubs and Dems on the hill except for a handful on both sides (Paul, Kucinich, Kaptur) who still have principles. There aren't enough of them, though to stop a bill. |
