The multi-colors you descibed happens when a star or planets light interacts with moisture in our atmosphere. Kind of like a prism. The lower the object is to the horizon, the greater the color effect because the light is traveling through more atmosphere than if it were straight up. This could be what you are seeing. ------ |

There are *some* geosynchronous satellites that remain in a fixed position (a few hundred, I believe) - but most satellites (a few thousand, more if you count space 'junk') are not like that, and move quite quickly across the sky. It is quite easy to see the more common *moving* satellites at night... 1. Don't bother looking late at night! By then, most of the sky above you is in the Earth's shadow, so there is no sunlight to reflect off the sat. (They don't have navigation lights!) 2. Look for objects that move slowly across the sky - once you spot one, watch it for a while - if it seems to have regular sharp 'blinks', it is an aircraft at cruising altitude. If it is steady, then you are probably watching a satellite. As you watch one, you may see it fade and vanish - that means it just entered the earth's shadow.. Some satellites may be seen going North-South or vice versa, but most will be seen going from West towards East. (If it goes East to West, it's likely an aircraft..) There's a reason for that, but I've waffled enough already. |

Others orbit faster or slow so move across the sky very quickly. Get satsaope and it will tell you when the visible ones pass overhead.
