The Five Greatest Guitar Solos Ever (according to me)
Here are my top five guitar solos ever performed by my favorite bands:

1. Have a Cigar - Pink Floyd

Superior to Comfortably Numb, in my opinion.

2. Highway Star - Deep Purple

I can't find a decent video of Purple doing it anywhere on YouTube... so you can watch the (superior) Dream Theater version instead!

3. Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DC

Any doubts that Angus Young can play guitar shall now be laid to rest.

4. Mr. Crowley - Ozzy Osbourne

Here, Ozzy fully demonstrates that he didn't need Black Sabbath anymore... he had Randy Rhoads instead (R.I.P).

5. Ride the Lightning - Metallica

Superior to "One" in every imaginable way in terms of guitar work, this song was actually co-written with Dave Mustaine before he was sacked from the band.

I'm not a huge Eagles fan but if Hotel California's solo isn't in your top five then you are clueless.

I'd love to throw in Black Magic Woman, but I wanted to keep it at "top five".

If I had made "top ten", you can bet your ass Santana would be in there. :)

There's something about this song that just make's my heart lift, I guess it's not really a solo though.

It's all a matter of opinion... and I can't satisfy everyone's tastes.

Hotel California is great, don't get me wrong... but it's not one of my personal "favorites".

'nuff said...
Yes, as through this world I've wandered
I've seen lots of funny men;
Some will rob you with a six-gun,
And some with a fountain pen.

And as through your life you travel,
Yes, as through your life you roam,
You won't never see an outlaw
Drive a family from their home.

Ever since the AC brought up Santana... I can't not post Black Magic Woman.

Here's the unofficial "sixth" in the Top Five:

6. Black Magic Woman - Santana

Absolutely gorgeous... superior to the Peter Green version in every way.

EDIT: I thought the audio in the other video was a bit crummy... I've replaced it with a louder and more clear-sounding video.

Dream Theater are an excellent band, but your putting across the wrong impression OP to people who have never even heard Deep Purple let alone Richie Blackmore.

As I stated, no decent Deep Purple videos of the song seem to exist on YouTube. There are several sloppy live versions, versions with their current guitarist Steve Morse (who I despise) and a badly mastered studio version, but nothing that would grip your attention.

If you must have it, here is the studio version of the song, (though it is poorly mastered):

Very true... unfortunately.

The Made in Japan live version is absolutely spectacular, but I can't find it on YouTube anywhere. It's likely that the copyright Nazis are preventing it from being uploaded.

There's a video on YouTube that claims to be the Made in Japan version, but is actually a recording from an entirely different concert.

I happened upon the Dream Theater version... and I thought they managed to perfectly capture the look, feel and sound of Deep Purple and the song so well, I just posted it instead.
