cell phones are useless in an emergency unless your phone has priority ID. The computers are programmed to restrict comms to those phones when something of an "emergency" nature happens. Cell phone ID programming is interesting. Lots more in there than just your phone #

Well , ever since terrorist began using cell phones to detonate roadside bombs the Secret Service has been disabling cell phones within a 50 mile wide area whenever the President or the Vice President travel by road somewhere.

They've been doing it for a few years now.

Its part of the rather extensive precautions the Secret Service has been taking ever 9/11.

The ID defines your "class of service" and you have a lower or "standard" class of service you ability to place a call can be pre-empted by anyone with a law enforcement classmarked phone. Within the various classes they are "priority" numbers or classes of service belonging to military and law enforcement and secret service, etc. These guys have (at the right level) the ability to 'seize" an in progress line or call and "bump" you off of the call and take the slot at the cell tower and then all thru the network. You will be talking to dead air or getting no signals all of a sudden. If you know how to "hack" your ID numbers changing a single digit from 1 or 2 to a 0 or 9 will make a huge difference in your service level. But the question is which of the digits out of the twenty or thirty digits long number is the "critical" one for that function??

I wish I knew for certain. Changing it is NOT a big deal.
