I know a lot about herpes - I've had it since 1986. I've studied a lot about it. The thing that most people don't know is this - if someone who is even just beginning to get a cold sore on their mouth (and they may not even know they are getting one - obviously, it is not apparent yet), and they go down south on you, you can get genital herpes. Likewise, if you kiss them and then go down south on them, they can get the herpes virus in their genital area. The virus is transmittable that way too - a lot of people don't know that. That's how I got it. When I told the guy, he was in total denial. It had to be him because there had been no one else.

One in six people have herpes. That's what my ob/gyn told me when I was diagnosed. He told me that many of his patients had it, and many were his friends. He said, "Those that laugh the loudest at the parties about the herpes jokes usually are the ones who have it." He was very cool about the whole thing.

When I met my husband, I disclosed on the first night we met, expecting to be rejected. He just said, "Explain it to me." We've been together for 23 years now and he doesn't have it because I know my body.

Herpes is an inconvenience but it's not what some make it out to be.
