Does anybody know the best way to convert my 401k fund to gold? Can it be done?

I´m not sure about 401k, but you can buy gold in an IRA.

note: a "gold-fund", even if based on hard assets, is not the same thing.

I also do business with American Church Trust using a Self Directed Precious Metals IRA. You´ll have to rollover your 401k into an IRA. Not a big deal though.

roll over your 401K into a `self-directed IRA´
and that IRA can buy gold for sure
i´m pretty sure you can do all of that without penalties or taxes
