"I don't mind the odd game of aerial ping-pong, but the reality is rugby is a far better game athletically, strategically and skills-wise." In what way? All players see everything come from one direction. AND on a small field. In what way is Rugby more "athletically" superior? Like wise with "skills"? I agree with you on Rugby and the hard hits though. But with AFL being a 360 degree game, you don't have time to prepare for the hits like a Rugby player can. |

Well the field could hardly be said to be "small". By athletically superior I meant in general - pound-for-pound - rugby guys are heavier, stronger, more physically heavy-set and athletic. Skills-wise? Well, rugby is much more of a fighting game like chess, picking out the weakspots, systematically trying to break through. If you've ever seen a game of 7s too, you'll know the ball-skills, passing/kicking far exceeds that of your average AFL player too. Not to mention the speed of rugby backs - when they get going, well, in comparison they out-motor your average AFL player as well. |

I'm sure NFL games in the past have been better. Quoting: Aussie Rules. 886339I tried real hard to watch the NFL showpiece. Even trying to ignore the larger players worthy of singing up to Jenny Craig, when their lard fat asses in tights, flashed up on screen. Granted, this is the NFL world of big boys capable of damage if tackled head on. I say, take your padding off and run for 30 seconds and play aussie rules over 4 x 20 minute quarters. But with all due respect, i came to understand their defensive and offensive parts in the NFL game. It's still fucking boring! What they contribute to the spectacle of the sport last seconds. It's nothing. It's a joke. Oh sure, a set play takes place, a tackle gets laid or a touchdown occurs. THE CROWD ROARS ... over FUCK ALL. Bugger ALL! Shit!. Even the commentators of NFL have nothing to boast about, because what ever occurs, last less than 20 seconds. The commentators have FUCK ALL to commentate on. Take the best NFL commentator and expose him to 1, 20 min quarter of Aussie Rules. He'd have a fucking heart attack or mental breakdown trying to keep up with the play. It's the quality of what goes on on the field which counts. Pound for pound, being heavier and stronger - and faster - makes your typical rugby player more athletic in most people's eyes. You've obviously never watched 7s, where the area of field vs the number of players on the field outdoes AFL on a monumental scale, and so their passing and kicking precision and speed gets put to the test: anyone with reasonable eyesight can see that the ballskills of these rugby players outdoes that of AFL players by approximately 2:1. Out motor - meaning, they are simply faster. Ok we are not going to agree on some things, but that's cool. I have a lot of respect for many AFL players and enjoy watching a good game. The only thing I think we will agree on is that soccer is probably at the lower end of the scale, insofar as that where soccer players ham it up hollywood style, AFL and rugby players are the exact opposite. |

However, I can respect the skill, athleticism and courage shown by these men. Some of those hits are brutal. Rugby League/Union, AFL, Gaelic Football, Hurling all make NFL look like a complete cissy sport. I mean WTF is the Superbowl about - all that padding, helmets, etc and more adverts and standing around posing than action. That said, my sport is boxing - a real man's sport ;-) |

Removing "big hits" from the equation, you have to ask yourself this. What code puts on the greater show and spectacle for the paying public? In Athletic ability, strength, skill and CONTINUITY!. Every play in the NFL lasts maybe a maximum 15 seconds before a ridiculous lull in proceedings. Add break, field change or some other BULLSHIT!It's a FARCE. Including the big hits. Our big hits are just as good. Both codes. NFL and AFL have one sided games, and boring games. BUT! There is no way on earth that the NFL could come close to matching the spectator appeal of the AFL.
