It wouldn't let anymore oil out. Remember the oil is still 3.5miles down further. The nuke isn't going to penetrate that reservoir. Having said that.. its not going to help the situation at all. It shouldn't be that drastic though, since we know the rig isn't sitting on top of the leak.

Btw, we would literally have develop technology to deploy a nuke or any explosive for that matter at that depth. Explosives haven't been used or designed for depths/pressure that significant.

hey guys nukes have been tested alot underwater, average depths are anywhere from 800-1500 meters usually. The US doesnt test above ground or underwater anymore.

Nukes are far less effective underwater, even at ground level, which is why they go off before hitting the ground.

The nuke would work. The scenario is this....

Many boatloads of sand contained in canvass blocks and sunk around the hole.

Nuclear bomb goes BOOM...and presto chango we have a very nice glass cap on the well.

VERY BAD IDEA

Set a BIG belly military (type) sub on top of it!

Open the belly up enough to wrap around the main oil spout.

Set the sub on top of it and down solid onto the gulf floor.

Its a temporary fix strong enough to shut down the flow until

the other well driller can cut through down low from the side.

The cruise the sub back to port for cleanup and repair.

Would the damage to the sub be any worse than a war wound?

Will the ecological damage be more expensive than a new sub?

How fast can it be done.

This should be looked upon as a war to get this oil stopped.
