An anarchist group claimed responsibility for firebombing an Ottawa bank Tuesday and vowed to bring its cause to the upcoming G8 and G20 summits.

The group, which identified itself as FFFC, posted a video of the bombing online, accompanied by a message criticizing Royal Bank of Canada for being “a major sponsor of the recently concluded 2010 Olympics on stolen indigenous land.”

The message also denounced the bank for being a “major financier” of Alberta’s tarsands while calling itself one of the greenest companies in Canada.

It goes on to read: “The games in Vancouver are now over, but resistance continues. An RBC branch can be found in every corner of Kanada (sic) . . . The G8/G20 ‘leaders’ and bankers are meeting in Huntsville and Toronto to make decisions that will further their policies of exploitation of people and the environment.

“We will be there.”

In the short video [link to ottawa.indymedia.org] filmed around 3:25 a.m. — two people can seen inside the foyer of an RBC branch in Ottawa’s Glebe neighbourhood.

Seconds later, the people run out the side door as fire explodes throughout the building, shattering the front window.

The video is shot from across the street.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which was put out before it spread to neighbouring buildings.

Damages are estimated to be about $300,000, according to local media reports.

This is not good. There must be other ways of action. People will never support such acts, and this is what happens here as well.

You're the dumbass. Look at their reasons - they targetted the bank because they sponsored the Olympics and their page is a load of bullcrap about Native rights and the tar sands.

I disagree with violence but FFS at least if it was about the bailouts or bankers bonuses or about how the banks enabled the skyrocketing housing costs it would at least be understandable. But this is just a load of enviro-crap that is the hall mark of the spoonfed bored suburban rich kid finding something to do now that college is out of session.

And they left the scene driving an SUV. Priceless hypocracy.

Very interesting. I spent many years in Canada and know it's players and politics well. This however is new. If these radicals are for real, they must be pretty stupid as they know the general Canadian public won't go for this armed violent bullshit resistance thing. Sort of unbelievable.

I would hazard an unpopular guess and say that this action was planned/orchestrated by RCMP and CSIS agents. They are always complaining that they don't have enough money and that people don't take them or potential threats seriously enough.

I really wouldn't put it past Canada's Conservative party, to order this kind of psychological op. Canadians like Americans will eat it up, hook line and sinker, and look to Canadian government to save them.

Rest assured there will be probably be arrests in the next few days. Prediction is that the authorities will claim to have solved the crime with the help of an under cover insider. Toronto 18 rings bells here.

After that look for further legislation against your privacy.

I will begin my own investigation of Canadian Authorities with my contacts and let you know what I find.

Very possible. It could also be a plan to restrict people's access to banks in the future by claiming they are all under terrorist threat when in reality they want to prevent a run on them during a crisis or switching to the Amero or what have you.
