I have around 7 services running in the background - I know EXACTLY what they are and what is required for me (personally) to do what I want to do without needless crap running in the background doing God knows what. I know EXACTLY what processes are running, I know EXACTLY what they do and what they are for. I can see EXACTLY what data is being transferred over the Internet from this computer, and all temporary data that is being transferred every second is stored in a separate memory space. |

This will install into Windows7 as "XP Mode"´. Whenever you have a totally incomaptible application that wont install on 7 or even more conveniant you own old USB Hardware like old Twain Scanners or USB devices for which you have no 64bit drivers .. well you can install all that stuff into the "XP Mode" and it will run. It even puts its (xp-era) icon in Windows7 startmenu and you can only tell by the Luna-Windows Decoration or by the Aero-Windows Decoration if an app is running in reality on 7 or on XP. You can for example run Internet Explorer 6 side by side with IE8 or if you update the one in XP to IE7 .... important for webdevelopers. Or you dont like Windows Mediaplayer 12 in 7 ? run version 9,10 or 11 in XP on your Win7 desktop.. USB Devices are just handed over from the 7 host to the XP guest. That way you can for example use XPs stoneold moviemaker to capture videos from your modern webcam or print to your 32bit only printer that is incompatible in Win7 64 .. The best is : Originally "XP Mode" required you to have a specific CPU, one that supports hardware virtualization. But Microsoft removed that with a update that you can get. That means XP-mode will run on any CPU, all you need is a supported Win7 edition which is pro or ultimate and enough ram ( MS defaults to 256MB Ram for that virtual XPSP3 ). |

But the drm killed my dvd drives, and while trying to put back permissions, it fried my registry. So now I am using Ubuntu 8.04, and it did take a linux expert to get my ati card working. However, I've managed to install things using synaptics, which is on Ubuntu, and there is no typing involved, it's all point and click. |

Ding dong the whitch is dead : [link to www.nogeekleftbehind.com] XPSp2 is too "end of life" same day, one needs XP with SP3 to live until 2014/2020 or whatever deadline MS sets until they stop delivering updates. Vista without any SP will follow next : dead - needs Sp1 or SP2 to be supported ( that is until 2017 for Vista Business ) Every SP coming to an MS OS will extend the lifetime by 24 months. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1037106 Germany 07/15/2010 01:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | .. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1037095So what's your reason running Windows 7? All software just works fine under XP... and you don't have to turn off or live with useless bullshit like AERO, Sideshow, UAC... etc. etc. Windows7 is the first consumer friendly and working 64bit client OS. Maybe I want to utilize all of my 8GB Ram and make use of a DirectX 10.1 graphics card ? I dont see any real option. I can choose between vista 64 or 7 64, both of them more or less the same. Win7 faster and "leighter", but in fact same tech background. Both let me run 128GB of Ram and both support DX11 ( vista with an update ) . XP allows only 3GB of Ram and stops at DX9( forget about xp 64 .. rebranded server os and only a testbed for devs) and every modern gpu is totally underpowered by DirectX9 which is the last for XP.. Sooner or later you will find games that WILL require Vista or 7 for DX10/11 . The graphic capabilities of modern Windows are a bit more then only "Aero".. Next MSN/Windows Live Messenger,Moviemaker,Phototools NEED Aero. Wont install on XP. Same true for the coming IE9 which uses Aero to speed up browsing with videos and rich media.. Even Photoshop is starting to "this feature is not possible on XP".. Poser 2010 ( 3d modelling app ) strongly recommends Vista or 7 and is tied to the search engine which is built into these OS. and so on.. we will soon see more and more apps no longer developping xp. It is just totally outdated from a technical standpoint. Its called "evolution". |
Dr. House User ID: 717743 United States 07/15/2010 01:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I prefer XP over Windows7. Unfortunately my old computer bit the dust. The graphics card became way out of date, no pixelshader, they stopped making updates for that in 2006, then the hard drive went an in order for me to upgrade either graphics or Harddrive I would have had to get a new mother board, new power source and a couple of other things new. So I compared the prices of all of these new innards to the price of a good new computer, It saved me a bit over 100 USD to just get a new tower. Now I have a duel core processor Nivida 9 hundred something. I was told that XP wouldn't be able to run parts of my computer. The technology part, such as processor speeds, graphics, etc are improving at a steady and even predictable rate. I think the turn over is now every 18 months. Most game companies and other programmers are already programing stuff for the next leap in all of this. Eventually XP will be no good. Like windows 98 or Windows 3. I'm hoping windows 10 will be much better. Or a new Operating System comes out by some brave new company that totally rocks and can process and use every other program from the big guys.
