NRC to hold public meeting on Watts Bar Unit 2 reactor

The NRC extended the construction permit for Watts Bar Unit 2 in 2008. The plant is located near Spring City, Tenn., about 60 miles southwest of Knoxville. TVA suspended construction of the unit in 1985, but decided in August 2007 to complete the project. TVA plans to complete construction in 2013.

The original story on unit 4 is that it was in an outage in prep for fresh fuel. 2/3 of the fuel remains in the reactor and 1/3 is changed at a time. That would put hot pins in the SFP at the time of the earthquake. These fuel assemblies would have been at their hottest upon being taken freshly from the reactor. Takes at least 5 years for those puppies to cool enough to be transferred to dry cask storage. Sometimes longer.

Citing Jiji Press and NHK (Japanese-only) as sources, Mochizuki says, “Xenon133 and 135 are measured at reactor 2.”

This radioactive xenon is a daughter product of Uranium-235. Xe-133 has a half life of 5.2 days, while Xe-135 has a half life of 9 hours.

“It proves the nuclear fuel is fissioning at reactor 2 still,” concludes Mochizuki.

It’s possible there are similar reactions occurring in the No. 1 and No. 3 reactors, the other cores damaged at the station, Matsumoto said.

“Melted fuel in the No. 2 reactor may have undergone a sustained process of nuclear fission or re-criticality,” Tetsuo Ito, the head of Kinki University’s Atomic Energy Research Institute, said by phone. “The nuclear fission should be containable by injecting boron into the reactor to absorb neutrons.”

Nope, not if the boric acid/boron cant penetrate into the corium. No good if it just lands on top.

Keep your eyes on 5+6 guys, theres big trouble brewing there.

And they contain the most amount of fuel, in hundreds of tonnes.

They said the other day they were getting some big readings from the spent fuel pool. And I notice they have been very very quiet about those two REACTORS.

I saw also a simulation (somewhere) showing a computer representation of the tsunami 1000 years ago that went up nearly 600 feet the side of coastline mountains!

It looked like someone dropping a housebrick in a childs paddling pool!!

Apperently there are ancient carvings on rocks that say

"dont build below this point"

or words to that effect.And those rocks are 600 feet up.

So its not as if they didnt know. I read a book not long ago called "a single pebble" look it up, its well worth the read. Basicly it describes the true story of a 24 year old american engineer sent to china to traverse the (cant remember the name of the river lol) anyway the bloody great big one! with three gorges. So he was supposed to be looking for a good site to build a hydro electric dam. This was I think the early nineteen twenties. So there was america trying to do this way back then. They decided not to after realising what would happen if they did. (too big,costly, weight of water etc etc)

Then just the other day someone said something about "stupid japs" and someone countered with " well, you DO realise that fukushima was built by an american engineer, working for a american company, using an american design!"

Not running down americans, just saying that the "best" minds in the business put it all togeather.

Just goes to show that we have forgotten how dangerous nuclear energy really is.

We have quite the wake up call now though.........

Yeah the boron is a feeble step.

It is ironic that the engineers decided excavating to bedrock for the plant would make it more stable. In doing so, they made it vulnerable to tsunami.

Many things about the Japanese nuke industry and the nuke industry in general are becoming apparent. A pattern of collusion between the operator/owners and the regulator/gov'ts has been exposed.

Many are responsible and to blame for this disaster. Tepco at the top of the list for their ineptitude and cowardice.
