If you had to retrain yourself as a techie what would you learn?

Touch typing.

To make the most money, programming. Think app development. Its crazy how much people pay for apps. Also advertising on apps can make you very good money. What is really increasing fast is SMS micro billing. Short codes can make you hundres of thousands a month. Good luck.

I would have taken more programming classes. I can barely get by in MATLAB--don't even ask me about R. Fortunately, I do not need to do any programming; I can get by using minitab.

Many programming jobs have be contracted out to India.

learning each of those skills does not require some years and years of training, i say learn them all and more, much more - whatever you need as you go, just plan to learn new software, hardware, methods, codes to to follow, weird customer requests, etc... plan to learn as you go and never stop learning.

besides after a while ya know all the main stuff and yer good, mostly for "weird stuff" one ups ya have to learn some new weird skill...
