I think you have quite a bit of it right,especially about proving who he is.I believe there isn't any amount of evidence that will convince mankind that this man is the son of God.
I don't really think it is up to him to declare himself the Messiah.I am pretty sure he is only flesh and blood and knows the only gifts he possesses are that of a flesh and blood man.
Imagine the vitriol and hatred he would have to endure without waiting for God to make it perfectly clear that he is his son. I know if I was him,I'd keep a low profile and wait.

My guess is that the nobody would look at us like this.

1). A person wont change until, and if, they are ready to.

2). To a herd of cattle, a cowboy is just the biggest cow.

3). A wolf can tell the difference, and a fence is no substitute.
