The bird (whom I've named Woodstock) made it thru the night and is still doing fine. I brought him to work with me so I could keep an eye on him. He has been eating, although very little. He seems to be comfortable with me now as he will perch on my hand and not move. He's very talkative, I found some audio clips of waxwings bird calls and when I played them he started chirping back! Quoting: Donivan Ill keep you updated! Love this thread. So, ummm, ok, it takes nine birds to imitate a giant caterpillar. - Kewl pic. Almost everyone thinks it's a caterpillar at first. :) Difficulties strengthen the Mind as labor does the body... ~Seneca |

I took the bird out to where I found him in a cardboard box nest I had rigged up yesterday. When I brought him out I fed him some blueberries and strawberries, which he eagerly devoured. Then I moved the box next to a tree. He started chirping away. A few minutes later I heard two other birds calling to him. Then isaw his parents flying around near him. They perched on a branch above him. Quoting: Donivan He was trying so hard to get out of the box and I finally stepped in and scooped him up and set him on the ground next to the box. He immediately hopped over to some bushes and his parents flew over to him and started feeding him. Once I saw that he was happily reunited with his family, I left. I am so happy that I was able to help him and reunite him with his family. This has truely been a wonderful learning experien and I'm very greatful this little bird came into my life, even if it was only temporary. Thank you everyone who came to this thread! Thank you for your advice and kind words! I couldn't have wished for a better outcome! Good for you yay op! here's a little Cherokee Morning Song for you. there are 2 translations for it. both beautiful i think. the one i learned as a kid goes: in the morning birds are singing and they sing and they sing oh oh heyo heyo heyo yah yah yah [youtube] [link to www.youtube.com] if someone could embed for me i'd appreiciate it. |

The parrents will do the rest. I only say this because he was dehydrated when you found him, and now he's back out there. I hope the night temps don't get too cold there, he's at an age where he'd still be in the nest for at least another week, possibly two (he won't survive a cold night on his own). Keep us posted if you lay eyes on him again. |

It's perfectly fine because raising a solitary baby bird is difficult. Even if it's parents had stuck around long enough to find it, the baby is weeks away from being able to fly. It will never make it without the protection of a nest. At least now the bird isn't going to die in vain, I'm sure some feral cat will really savor his flavor. |

What a beautiful happy ending!!! the little baby is right back where he started before his rescue, and probably by morning will be in the same condition as was his sibling when they were found together (dying and finally dead). the baby bird cannot get up into the tree to safety, because he is too young, so, through the night, a cat, snake, blackbird, which is what probably threw him out of his nest in the first place, dog, rat, kid, car will take care of him now, because, at night, his parents cannot. At the crack of dawn, if he made it through the night, if he makes a sound or moves, the blackbird will have him; ripe him to shreds and feed him to her babies. The parents may try to fight off the blackbird, but we know what happened to the sibling during that first fight. I wouldhave tucked the baby behind my bra, between my breast, for the night, where he would be safe, and let him have time with his parents during the day, for however many days it took, until he could fly up into a tree. I took it outside and with some ceremony, let it fly away. It flew across the street to the neighbors cedar tree. Then within 30 seconds, the damned cat that belonged to that neighbor hunted down that little bird and ran off with it and ate it. I cried for a week. So the moral is make sure you release it far away from any gd cats!!! why did it leave home in the first place They never do that |

Tammy Wynette ~ Help Me Make It Through The Night . [link to www.youtube.com] I knew something like this might come up... Well, I do not believe I ever stated that his nest was in a tree. All I said was I found them in a parking lot at my office. When I released him to his parents I watched his progress for about 45 minutes. He hopped into a bunch of bushes, and began hopping his way up the branches towards his parents. This bird was not injured at all, and appeared to be very close to gaining the ability to fly. So his progress was fairly quick. I left him after I saw him safely with his parents, and eating. I actually went back out to that spot several hours later to make sure everything was ok, It turns out his nest was in the bushes he had rendezvoused with his parents at. So, no, the little baby is not right back where he started. I did EVERYTHING I possibly could have to assure his survival, both when he was with me, and when i released him. I was able to successfully feed him berries, as several posters recommended. I made sure to keep him warm at night by placing him in a large cardboard box padded with cloth towels, a little water, food and I even went out of my way to find an old, abandoned birds nest under my deck (i checked for bugs, or anything that could have hurt him) for him to sleep in. He survived the night and was very energetic and healthy in the morning. I took this birds life as serious as I would my own. And I intend to check up on him tomorrow. My friends, we are all living in extraordinary interesting times. The events to come will undoubtedly be some of the most important in our history. Embrace the change to come. I love you all! |
