Five Knoxville police beat homeless man, cover it up. Citizens complain, they get charged with MISDEMEANOR assault (video)
Five Knoxville police officers hog-tie, then brutally beat a homeless man. The other police, including a captain, a lieutenant, and a sergeant cover the crime up.

One of those covering up the crime was Lt. Brad Anders who is an elected Knox County Commissioner.

It sounds like the only reason they got caught was that citizens witnessed the crime and complained.

According to the Knoxville News Sentinel there were seven officers at the scene of the beating and three ranking supervisors involved in the coverup.

All together there were ten (10) Knoxville police officers that were reported to have been involved in the crime and the coverup.

Charged with misdemeanor assault:
1). Jeremy Jinnett
2). Ty Compton
3). Chris Whitfield

Participated in coverup:
4). Lt. Brad Anders (also a Knox County Commissioner)
5). Capt. Eve Thomas
6). Sgt. John Shelton

Involved in assault/coverup but not charged:
7). Richard Derrick White
8). Nicholas Ferro

One of these two (apparently) lesbians injured her hand punching the victim:
9). Haley Starr
10). Cynthia LeeAnn DeMarcus

Editorial: Police chief earns praise for halting beating cover-up

The three officers involved in the beating have confessed, entering guilty pleas last week to misdemeanor assault and felony official oppression charges. Former Knoxville Police Department officers Jeremy Jinnett, Ty Compton and Chris Whitfield face an Aug. 8 sentencing hearing.

Other officers and supervisors attempted to cover up the incident, which was captured on in-cruiser video and witnessed by people who live in the North Knoxville neighborhood where the incident occurred. One of the supervisors, Lt. Brad Anders, also is a Knox County commissioner.

Capt. Eve Thomas, Sgt. John Shelton and Anders approved what turned out to be deceitful use-of-force reports without having viewed the incriminating video. Thomas received an oral reprimand, while Anders and Shelton received written reprimands.

Officers Richard Derrick White and Nicholas Ferro also were found at fault in Miller’s probe of excessive force against Mallicoat, while the original two responding officers to the scene that day — Haley Starr and Cynthia LeeAnn DeMarcus — were labeled in Miller’s report as willfully blind and deceitful. Each was suspended without pay.

KPD chief shows video of officers assaulting homeless man; trio face Aug. 8 sentencing after plea

According to prosecutor Ken Irvine, one or the other of the officers struck Mallicoat with their fists, stood on him, kicked him, hogtied him and dropped him. Mallicoat suffered broken ribs and was hospitalized.

Clearly the officer who picked him up and threw him on the ground should be out of a job. Could not see to much else though.

Just to be clear, the reason they attacked him, according to the audio, was because he did not sit down.
