My younger dog had a little bit of blood on two of her paws when she came back in. Quoting: Oh Kay This morning after it got light out. I discovered there was a dead animal in the backyard. At first I thought it was a cat. After coming back in the house to get a trash bag and then getting closer to take care of it, I discovered it was a raccoon. After talking to the vet, good news is no reports of rabid raccoons in my area for some time. Called the state health dept and my hubby is taking the raccoons body to get it tested. If he gets it there by 11:00 AM the test will be done today. I have checked my dogs' body to make sure she has no cuts, bite's or wounds of any kind. She doesn't have any. I really hope & pray the rabies test comes back neg. If you have been vaccinating them against rabies, they should be fine. |

The rabies vaccine, like any vaccine or treatment, isn't perfect. Good luck OP, for you and your furbabies. |

I really hope & pray the rabies test comes back neg. Overreact much? The coon wasn't out in the day, the dog has no cuts and is probably vaccinated... But best to keep your pets on a leash since you can't control them. |

It's possible the raccoon could have already been dead. If that's the case the only thing I can come up with is maybe it got hit by a car then crawled over the fence to die. Good news so far it's been 15 years since there has been a reported case of rabies found in a raccoon in my state. |

Raccoons only live on average 2 years in the wild, but they would live 20 years as a pet. We treat the wildlife in this country horribly, we should be ashamed. Plus raccoons are so much more like little people than dogs. they will sometimes walk a ways upright, they have little hands they use just like a person. |
