So...Let's first start with the movie where SK found
some "clues"!

The film "Melancholia" was a real "sleeper" MOVIE--
and most reviews of the film TOTALLY MISSED THE MARK
ON VON TRIER'S MESSAGE! This story was NOT ABOUT CLINICAL
DEPRESSION (as most reviews seem to discuss) but rather
about a somewhat unknown--but REAL affliction--called
"The Cassandra Complex." Kirsten Dunst who is the focus
of the Cassandra Complex has 2nd sight and knows that an
in-bound planetoid object (Nibiru?) is in a collision
course with Earth. So, What is the "Cassandra Complex?"

DEFINITION: Its a term in psychology taken
from Greek myth. Cassandra was the daughter of King
Priam and Queen Hecuba, she was a prophetic seer
but lacked the power of persuasion and was never
believed.

So when we say someone has a "cassandra complex"
its saying they know something terrible is going
to happen but they lack the persuasive skill to alert others. Often people who have said to have this sad
affliction (director, Von Trier does an exquisite job
in presenting this "catch-22" dilemma with Kurstin
Dunst in "Melancholia" in a way you can truly empathize
with her situation...sadly THIS AFFLICTION does exist
at the present time IN REALITY with multi-level disasters
happening every week now!) Men and women who suffer
with "The Cassandra Complex" may or may NOT be
delussional--some are CLARVOYANT--and will often fall
into deep depression because they feel helpless to
aide their loved ones and friends. PROZAC DOES NOT HELP
"THE CASSANDRA COMPLEX" NOR DOES PSYCHOTHERAPY because
the true complex is not an illness!
STORYLINEThe movie follows "Justine" (Kristen Dunst) and her
sister's (claire) family as the astrophysist husband
confirms Justine's fears (but he believes it will just
fly-by and takes it light-heartedly.) The story evolves
from there to its gut-wrenching real-to-life ending
(clip below) of the actual collision scene. NOT A FILM
FOR FUN...but presents its storyline artistically and
professionally. (More about the film below!)

People either love this very beautiful film (just on
the merits of its artistry it is wonderful!)...or
possibly because of the film's dealing with "Justine's"
depression (she actually is NOT so much depressed as
suffering from what is called "The Kassandra Complex"
--preknowledge of a disaster without the means to warn
others.)

...In any film involving the destruction of the globe, we know that, if it is not to be saved, there must be a "money shot" depicting the actual cataclysm. I doubt any could do better than von Trier does here. There are no tidal waves.

No animals fleeing through burning forests. No skyscrapers falling. None of that easy stuff. No, there is simply a character standing on a hill and staring straight at the impending doom, as von Trier shows it happening in what logically must be slow motion, with a fearsome preliminary merging of planetary atmospheres!

Wow I cant believe you did not like it. I am a hardcore apocalyptic, zombie,war,movie buff and I hate the fru fru art movies but this one really moved me almost to TEARS!

I liked this film and want to see it again. I saw it a few months ago but have been thinking a lot about it since. I disagree with a few points made on here, however.

I don't think the rogue planet is a mere metaphor for depression; instead, the film is making a symbolic connection between the two. The opening sequence of space
and the two planets with background music from Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde" sets up a mythic context
for the film. The first narrative section focuses on the wedding, presents us the the melancholic Clair Daines' character, who seems to have everything but is in a deeply depressive state. As things should get happier for her,
she becomes more depressed. In the second narrative section, however, when real doom faces her, she pulls it all together even when everyone else is falling apart.

These two different narrative sections, taken together and preceeded with the opening sequence, provide a complex portrait of human existence, connected by the reality that we all face doom through our death.
