Or sound waves, out of human hearing. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28683516 I'd like to go outside and watch, but have to be up too early tomorrow. And doubt I'd stay outside if all the animals started that kind of commotion!!! Interesting post, OP! Oh YES! I definitely wonder if there was a connection. Aww, that's a shame. Luckily I don't work till the afternoon, so I can sleep in. Right!!! It was pretty freaky.., because I've been outside countless hours of the night since I moved here 5 yrs ago, and I've never been privy to that kind of chaos lol! Eek! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46821775 Thanks! :D Was kinda curious to see if anyone else on here was having the same weird stuff going on. No more oddness since everything got quiet and calm. Kinda nice... don't feel like I need to find me a big stick anymore, lol. But I hope it starts up again... It's scary and awesome at the same time. :) |
Anonymous Astrophysicist User ID: 47658180 United States 10/01/2013 12:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Having an interesting night of stargazing here in NW Georgia! Quoting: CuriousSoul So, I'm sitting out here in a field under a beautiful blanket of stars. Suddenly, I see a bright pink meteor shoot across the sky and break into two pieces before fading away. Most beautiful thing I've ever seen in the sky!!! Well, not long after I see the shooting star, I hear a strange animal sound start coming from the small patch of woods across the field. Never heard this sound before... almost sounded like a large crane-like bird, which we have those around here. Okay... then all at once, every dog in the area starts howling and barking like crazy for no apparent reason. Then, amidst all this craziness, an owl starts hooting loudly along with the other animals... then, I kid you not, a rooster starts clucking loudly from a neighborhood close by. All this hooting and hollering goes on for a good 5 mins, and then suddenly it stops. All I hear is crickets and your usual night sounds now. I have to say, my hair was standing on end, lol!!! I've never experienced anything like that before... slightly creepy, haha, but extremely intriguing. Well, just wanted to pass along this lil observation. :) I'll be outside for a while. Hoping I get to see more shooting stars! Opie's meteor was a fruit? A PINK meteor? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39447110 Dogs, cows, roosters, donkey, owl, all at the same time..then just nothing. Holy crap, was that tonight? O.o That's exactly how it was. My mom said that when she was growing up in Costa Rica, all the animals would start acting crazy like that right before they would have an earthquake. Hopefully that doesn't apply here... |

Don't put me on, because the color is critical to determining composition and thus origin. Pink is an oddball for sure. |

No, seriously, I've never heard of a pink one before, but I have to report exactly what I see! I'm a very logic driven person, even tho I like strangeness, but my mind is highly scientific and I can't deviate from the truth of what I witnessed no matter how unbelievable it might seem to others. I saw what I saw... That's all I can say. I'd love to see your compilation sometime. I'm addicted to research! |

An active atmosphere may have muted the color also. OP - were the star actively "twinkling"? Quoting: OnTheFence Hmm... Sounds like a plausible possibility! I'm gonna have to research 'active atmosphere' now. :) Curious! And YES! They were twinkling like crazy! All kinds of rainbow colors going on with Capella, Arcturus, and Vega tonight. |

The atmosphere is in layers. I really don't remember what causes the layers to be active more than at other times. But when they are shifting, you get the twinkling effect of the stars. The layers are just reflecting (or is it refracting) the light from the stars ... hence the twinkling effect. I'm only guessing that an active atmosphere may also have altered the color of the fireball you saw. That you saw a red one and not really a pink one. I'm only guessing. |
