Re: Detroit water doom: Mass incarcerations for protesters following shutoffs!
As I said before, We live near Detroit and this news got me scared enough to take out a loan to pay our bills up to date. So maybe it worked on us....we heard the message! Hopefully we can buckle down and pay the loan off soon. I wish eveyone had this option. We all have to pay our way if we can.

Of course , not the issue at hand ?

The issue at hand is people being rounded up in mass for their first amendment rights ? Do you understand?

I am paying close attention and I care. I didnt mean to sound like I didnt. If there is something you think I should do, please ask! Otherwise, I will keep my ears open and try to let my friends and relatives know about it.

I emailed my contact at Fox2, emailed the author of the article, asked her if she would call in tonight, emailed my cohost on Rense tonight (because she already sent me a topic list earlier) so we can accomodate this story.

How many local GLPers might be able to go to this thing tomorrow? Anybody?

This could get really ugly.

Water cut-offs in Detroit a violation of human rights
By
Maude Barlow May 27, 2014

From the article...But the people of Detroit face another sinister enemy. Every day, thousands of them, in a city that is situated right by a body of water carrying one fifth of the world’s water supply, are having their ‎water ruthlessly cut off by men working for the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. Most of the residents are African American and two thirds of the cut offs involve children, which means that in some cases, child welfare authorities are moving in to remove children from their homes as it is a requirement that there be working utilities in all homes housing children.

People are given no warning and no time to fill buckets, sinks and tubs. Sick people are left without running water and running toilets. People recovering from surgery cannot wash and change bandages. Children cannot bathe and parents cannot cook. Is this a small number of victims? No. The water department has decreed that it will turn the water off to all 120,000 residences that owe ‎it money by the end of the summer although it has made no such threat to the many corporations and institutions that are in arrears on their bills as well. How did it come to this?

Detroit is a victim of decades of market driven neoliberal policy that put business and profit ahead of public good. Social security programs have been slashed and their delivery privatized. Investment in essential infrastructure has been slashed. Every winter, hundreds of aging pipes spew water from leaks and the water has not been turned off in thousands of abandoned houses and boarded up businesses where frozen pipes also lose huge amounts of water.

With globalization and the hollowing out of the once mighty auto industry, wealth and businesses fled to he suburbs, draining ‎the city of its tax base and the water department of its revenues. (There are one million fewer people living in Detroit than there were in the 1950s.)

The burden of paying for the water and sewer services landed squarely on those who stayed, mostly poor African Americans. Rates rose 119 per cent in a decade in a city with record high unemployment and a 40 per cent poverty rate...

Pay your bills dumb dumb. All the protesters had manicures and pedicures though. New extensions and Obama phones. But can't pay a water bill.

The City of Detroit must be taken under control due to its strategic location with Canada and the largest freshwater surface sources on the planet. It an area of great interest and must be rebuilt for the new and ordered future of the world.

Gentrification is complete, the next stages must be accelerated greatly.
 Quoting: 535 52787840

What next stages?
 Quoting: goldielucks

The systematic removal of undesirables in prescribed order:

Firstly by self-determination through discomfort created by the state.

Secondly, by force through the apparatus of the state.

Thirdly, by any means necessary.
 Quoting: 535 52787840

Where do you propose they go? They had better not come to the west side. Things are quite nice over here. We don't need any of that crap! Muskegon is the last bucket to clean up, but they are working on it. Right now, nothing can be bought or sold within Muskegon Heights, the ghetto of that town. Kent and Ottawa counties' economic outlook is very good. Things are humming along. Most take pride in there neighborhood and with a Christian work ethic and the scenic shoreline and all that goes with that, it is a very desirable place to live and raise a family.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1464564

Nothing was ever mentioned in regards to a mass migration. Simply a permanent systematic removal through economic warfare, lawmaking, and any means necessary.

We dealt with this 3 or 4 pages back.

The issues are:

1) Minimal to no warning water is being shut off for as little as 60 day delinquency

2) Proof of shutoff not provided, in the case mentioned arrested for asking questions

3) Protesters are now prisoners

4) Prisoners are being held at an old jail that is supposed to be CLOSED per MDOT

5) Multiple BS charges added at time of arraignment

6) CPS sweeps in next to take children from "homes w/o water"

You know that costs a lot more money than hiring one person to help people figure out how to pay the bill! Imprisonment is very expensive and so is taking people away from thier jobs...not to mention the horrific stuff it does to families and the dominoe effect of that. What a nightmare! .....sorry, I just realized you probably arent seeing this as a real threat to yourself and your family...yet.

But why are they protesting?
How many shut off notices does it take to be considered a warning?
Is the population of Detroit so used to getting what they want for free that when the free stuff stops, they take to the streets?
I don't normally land on the side of the STATE but, in this case, I don't see a problem sweeping the streets of garbage and late water bills that have not been paid.
Sad to think this is a city in the USA.

Can't say I disagree. They are using the EPA here to limit land purchases for residential or agricultural use. Land that is perfectly fine for that use. I am not a realtor but talk to many and I hear the codes and bylaws are growing so fast, one can not keep up. Most of it revolves around Agenda 21 (so I am told) which I am not the least bit familiar. A friend of mine is a member of the Campaign for Liberty and she has tried to get me to join and attend meetings, which hit on this topic. I'm just too busy trying to keep my own head above water.

The issues are:

1) Minimal to no warning water is being shut off for as little as 60 day delinquency

2) Proof of shutoff not provided, in the case mentioned arrested for asking questions
 Quoting: RadChick

1) Do delinquent payers deserve a marching band towing a banner that states, "PAY YO BILL, OR YOU'LL GET CUT OFF!" to come down their street?! If someone has not paid the bill in 60 or more days, THEY should know they are delinquent. It is then incumbent upon them to talk with the water company and try to work out a payment plan or alternative (charity) to pay the past due amount. And if they are so irresponsible that they don't, too bad.

2) The proof of shutoff is the company's lock out tag on the line. Is it possible a notice was left? Is it possible this woman got indignant with the worker? Is it possible that in a fit, she grabbed the bucket off the back of the truck? I don't know either way. And I guess no one else knows for sure. Unless it was videotaped. Do you know if it was recorded for proof?
