Good thread.

I have small gardens as I lack the time now to tend to larger ones these days (oh thank you fucking economy for this - this is another long story).

I have had laying hens for years and collect their eggs. If I could I would live off of what is out of my garden and eat the eggs (I do not kill animals as I refuse to it sickens me). My brother also fishes from time to time so he gives us his extra catches. As to meat, I could give it up all together no problems. Meat can go through the roof in price I don't give a shit I will buy much less of it and replace it with other alternatives.

It is not just the meat that keeps going up it is everything.....

Yes we did at Starbucks. It was great meeting you. Thanks for your offer I really appreciate it. Been going through a lot of crap lately personally and financially hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel soon because I am getting sick of this shit (been going on for way too long).

Cotornix Quail are highly productive. So is an Aquaponics system with Tilapia.

You could do these on a mini farm or even an apartment.

Get some of this stuff on the go in streams/swamps/buckets...

Ipomoea aquatica (water spinach, river spinach,[1] water morning glory)

practically a staple here in Thailand, where they eat almost everything

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

". aquatica is listed on the USDA internet site as a "Class A noxious weed",[5] especially in the states of Florida, California, and Hawaii, where it can be observed growing in the wild.[6] I. aquatica has been extensively cultivated in Texas for over 30 years, having been originally brought there by Asian immigrants. Because no evidence indicates the plant has escaped into the wild, Texas lifted its ban on cultivation for personal use with no restrictions or requirements, noting its importance as a vegetable in many cultures, and also began permitting cultivation for commercial sales with the requirement of an exotic species permit"

i just looked for real estate in a specified area/towns. all properties.

but the problem in finding a place was all bc of me.

my dad atm will be 8 miles from me. distance was important.

hes in an area that rural property went thru the roof. homes with land....400-1mil

in the older rural areas - if you were lucky to find a house/land with say 8-10 acres there was a well water contaminant issue due to the closed landfill. <---those homes are still on the mkt. cant sellem.

other homes have water/mold problems - especially around the beautiful vineyard areas.

my dads friend is a realtor - and she knew better than to show me just anything bc i dont have time for that shit.

i found 2 places - one in a nu section and the property had no trees no fences. animals would be problematic for the neighbors even tho theres a farm across the street - mr & mrs snooty wouldve been PITFA's

this mini farm i got is in an older section, house built in 74 - w/trees and farm across the street - and coincidentally my dads hunting property is in eyeview across but down the street. so it worked out.

Was just going to link to a youtube on pallet gardening. It looks to me like if you have a balcony facing any direction but north that you could do this. I am going to do one just to see what happens. Short carrots, leaf lettuce, beets, onions, greens, even brocolli at the top would give you all kinds of veggies. Grow cukes and small tomatoes in buckets at the side, and bush beans on the bottom row so they can flop down on the floor.

Hosea 4:3

3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

King James Version (KJV)

Do you have eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart to understand? JESUS CHRIST is the ONLY WAY to SALVATION, DELIVERANCE and PEACE! Soon his grace will be taken from the earth and his WRATH will be poured out. Accept JESUS CHRIST while the GRACE of GOD is still available. May the Peace of God be with you! Love, Pray, Repent and Forgive.

Re: GLP Recession Proof - Summer 2014 Planting Season
I have a good amount of suburban yard land but rocky soil that even a back hoe has problems with. So I have been going container & raised bed gardens for several years.

I grow herbs, tomatoes and peppers in containers. Some I have bought and others I have found. Hint- plant maintenance companies throw out the plants and pots. I got four great pots from a closed tanning salon. I washed them well with Bleach and let them sit in the sun for a couple days. You need good fertilizers and soil and containers dry out much faster than an in-ground garden. When it is hot and sunny you will probably need to water daily. Also container don't always get as much rain as falls so you may want an individual rain gauge in your pots. I recently have seen a neighbor growing tomatoes in a 5 gal home depot orange bucket. Definitely cheaper than pretty pots.

For raised beds I got all of my advice from [link to www.mysquarefootgarden.net] It was really helpful. Be sure to research companion planting.

Bell pepper plants in containers can be wintered inside and will produce for multiple years if placed back outside when the weather warms up.

You can also combine a 'window box" type planter with a trellis [link to www.bedbathandbeyond.com] to grow vines in a small space.

If possible use spring and fall planting to extend your garden.

If all else fails look into sprouting seeds for fresh vegetables throughout the winter

We grow the 3 sisters garden technique.

2.5 foot dia mound, corn in center, beans surround (sow 1 every 2 weeks for successive bean harvest) and squash/pumpkin.

The three help each other grow better.

The bean climbs the corn and provides nitrogen. The squash acts like a mulch.

Increases yield per square foot. great for sub urban growers.

i've heard they are developing seeds that will produce vegetables extremely fast. from what i remember, they expect some vegetables to grow overnight (maybe lettuce?).

has anyone else heard this? sounds unbelievable, but i vaguely remember it coming from a reliable source. if that is true, imagine the value.

Not that I know of, but I have grown many trials with and with out magnets.

North up stunts them, south up encourages growth.

This year, my corn sprouted in 3 days with a welder magnet 1 foot away, facing south up.

Lots of people had since proven it. We just don't know why it works.

I got fed up with my failed tomato pot farming and threw it all out in my 'organic dirt pile'.

Now my tomatoes AND my green peppers are growing on their own - without my help.

Yay!
