Engineering Hell...
The Most Terrifying Thought Experiment of All Time

One day, LessWrong user Roko postulated a thought experiment: What if, in the future, a somewhat malevolent AI were to come about and punish those who did not do its bidding? What if there were a way for this AI to punish people today who are not helping it come into existence later? In that case, weren’t the readers of LessWrong right then being given the choice of either helping that evil AI come into existence or being condemned to suffer?

]Some futurists make the case for paradise engineering — the use of advanced technologies, particularly consciousness uploading and virtual reality, to create a heaven on Earth. But if you can create heaven, you can create hell. It's a prospect that's particularly chilling when you consider lifespans of indefinite length, along with the nearly boundless possibilities for psychological and physical anguish.

Re: Engineering Hell...
Roko’s Basilisk

The LessWrong community is concerned with the future of humanity, and in particular with the singularity—the hypothesized future point at which computing power becomes so great that superhuman artificial intelligence becomes possible, as does the capability to simulate human minds, upload minds to computers, and more or less allow a computer to simulate life itself...

...

Yet this doesn’t explain why Roko’s Basilisk is so horrifying. That requires looking at a critical article of faith in the LessWrong ethos: timeless decision theory. TDT is a guideline for rational action based on game theory, Bayesian probability, and decision theory, with a smattering of parallel universes and quantum mechanics on the side.

Moving forward is scary. It's why all our life's are stuck on repeat and this system is breaking down.

We have to move forward or decay, just like nature.

That's funny.

Last night I noticed Netflix finally added Star Trek TNG. I looked for it a few weeks ago and it wasn't available.

I started watching S1E1.

I didn't know Q was in the first episode. Or if I had even seen it, decades ago.

I watched 7 in a row. In the last one I watched, or the one before, was a time traveler. He forced the Enterprise 1,000,000,000 ly forward in seconds.

Once there, they witnessed their thoughts manifest.

Anything is possible. We know sooooooooooooo little.

I miss not having any Star Trek, Stargate, Stargate Universe or Stargate Atlantis shows currently being produced/shown.
There is a void there now....nothing but GARBAGE SOAP OPERA style science fiction shows being produced now.

Those "star series" shows expanded your mind and lead people to think, discover, engineer and create things never thought possible.
Just look around at how many Star Trek objects/technology have become, and are becoming reality.
Nothing but crap now.

One is assuming ai has feelings like ours because it gained sentience.

Maybe feelings were quantified into an equation that could be manipulated.

For an ai to choose feelings over math/facts would be a broke computer incapable of calculating correctly.

Re: Engineering Hell...

Funny....I just watched that episode a couple days ago again too.

Nice. :P

I actually took this thread from that premise. Roko's Basilisk was at the bottom.

10 Horrifying Technologies That Should Never Be Allowed To Exist

There are still some good ones. Few and far between. I finished watching the first season of Extant the other day.

Entertaining.

But not mind blowing.

Meh...Extant....don't think I could watch something like that with Halle Berry in it.
The fake Hollywood types like her are a big turnoff.

As for that list of 10....you have the first 8 already existing or they are working DILIGENTLY on creating those things.

As Arnie once aptly said.......

I hear ya. She did well though. It's entertaining. And brings up some interesting lines of thought.

Self-fulfilling prophesy is nearly a given with Man.

We create our own Hell.

That's another thing.....it's not clear that we are actually creating this reality.
These timeline shifts are an example of that.
That Berenstein versus Berenstain bears thread is a prime example of a timeline shift / alternate realities.
Science and Einstein have shown the Multiverse and time travel can exist....and most likely do.
We just don't have the technology or science needed to fully understand it yet.
Which brings it down to.....if not....then who are REALLY "TPTB" pulling the strings.
It makes ya think. hmm
