If they could turn back time, they would have done things differently. They would have gone to college, not gotten a divorce, saved more money, been a better father/mother, lived more, loved more, traveled, not drank so much, been kinder, etc. Some people live in the future, when they win the lottery, when they get a better job, when they graduate, when they meet their soul mate, when the economy gets better, when life settles down, when their kids are grown, when they retire, etc. Then there are those of us who live in the moment. We can’t change the past, we can’t control the future, all we have is right now. While most people are busy worrying about the past and the future they are forgetting to LIVE! There are NO guarantees’ in life. There are NO guarantees that you are not going to suffer a heart attack while sitting at your desk. There are no guarantees that you are not going to be killed in a car accident on your way home from work. There are no guarantees that you are not going to die dragging your tomato plants inside. There are no guarantees that a meteorite is not going to land on your head. There are no guarantees that you are not going to die by a number of crazy things that life throws into your path. So while you are worrying about things that you can not control, don’t forget to LIVE! Live each and every moment like it’s your last. Put down your phones and look up at the sun, moon, stars, and clouds. Look into people’s eyes, enjoy the innocence of children, smell the flowers and grass, enjoy the changing leaves, smile when you see the Canadian geese fly North or Monarch butterflies heading South, watch squirrels burring seeds for the winter, sing along to your favorite song, dance around your room like no one is watching, take a long soak in a bathtub, have an extra piece of chocolate, drink the entire bottle of wine, take a walk, hug your dog/cat, kiss your children, tell your spouse you appreciate them, help a stranger, take a deep breath and slow down. You only get one life so enjoy every breath you take. Live, Love, Laugh and enjoy every moment as if it is your last….because it could be! Thinking about the past - regretting, wondering how it could have or should have gone, wishing to get back a lost moment. Or thinking about the future - dreading what's around the corner, or even imagining the best. All the while, real life is drifting by right in front of you. Want some instant get-your-ass-in-the-now recipes? So simple. Hold something small in your hand. A toy car, an olive pit, a pencil, a rock. Doesn't matter what. Spend 10 minutes examining it, studying it, feeling it, noticing every detail. Not judging it or thinking about, just observing it. Or just sit still and feel your body. Feel your guts gurgling around. Feel your heart beating. Feel your clothes touching your skin. Feel the air going in and out of your nostrils. Just feel yourself without judging or thinking. Feel the physical reality of every second. When you are fully engaged in anything like this, you cannot think. You can't live in your head. You are present. It probably won't be miraculous, but it also won't be dreadful or scary or put you on any of the tiny emotional roller coaster rides that your mind puts you on throughout the rest of the day. |
