P/2014 X1 Elenin, it's official!
[link to www.minorplanetcenter.net]
Yes, not only is it a new comet Elenin, not only did he find it at just the right moment to land the "X1" designation again (indicating the time of year and order of discovery), but he did it using the remotely controlled ISON telescope network in New Mexico! Pre-discovery images were located on a variety of professional surveys including Pan-STARRS. Here's a picture of his new discovery he posted to facebook:

Yay! Another object to make the rounds on GLP.

Wonder what the spin is going to be on this one? Negriod space aliens, the 13th SET of Ra, North pole impact zone, and last but not least Mork.

Can we all promise not to make 11,000 threads about how this is Nibiru, that it will hit earth, that is will cause everyone to die of the plague, that it is a spaceship, that it signals ascension to the fifth dimension....

please? Pretty please?

Well since its perihelion distance is about 1.81 AU it won't get particularly close to earth. It has an orbital period of about 15 years so its a short period comet hence the "P" designation. It's around magnitude 17~18 so it's far too dim to see by eye and needs a powerful telescope to detect it.

JPL Horizons currently predicts it reaches a maximum apparent brightness of about magnitude 17.25 on the evening of December 21st.

That date should not be confused with its closest approach to earth though. According to the initial orbit that's actually tonight, as it turns out. In 3 hours and 15 minutes give or take.

It will continue to brighten slightly over the next few days peaking on about the evening of December 21st because its still getting closer to the sun even as it starts to get farther from earth. Eventually the increasing distance from earth should win as the determining factor before it hits perihelion next month.

*Scratch that, I was looking at topocentric distance dictated by my location, my bad, its already passed the point of closest approach to earth
