Quoting: Anonymous Coward 45665622 The Chip is an RFID device. It carries a unique number that is assigned to you, just like the old MAG-Stripe except 1 thing. It can be activated by sensors (RFID readers) anywhere. Just like the ones used in Tollways In other words it can be used to track you. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 70579016 Australia 03/17/2016 09:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here in Australia we've had the chip in our cards for the last 5 years, its for contactless transactions ie if the retailer has a contactless eftpos machine you just tap your card near it and away you go. The chip is easy to disable, just shoot a hole punch through it. The magnetic strip will still work, just not the chip. I've done it to both my credit and debit cards, mainly because of theft/card skimming issues. I dont know about the states but here most contactless cards have a $100 no-pin limit, meaning if someone were to physically steal the card they'd be able to buy products up to $100 until the card is stopped. I dunno about it being "the mark of the beast", the same thing was said about barcodes when they were introduced. It'll be in the form of a chip, just not in your credit card. Hope this helps! |

Make sure you have an RFID blocking wallet. There are many types out there. Don't try to carry it around otherwise. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 58844257 United States 03/17/2016 09:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | seems odd how you have to leave the card in for a while doesn't it? there's no good reason for it... like having to wait for the register etc. the reader could snapshot your chip and hold it in memory etc while it waits for the register it's an obvious maneuver by the banks to skyrocket fraud from cards left in the machine... many cards don't have pin numbers once people complain about it they will be told to use a phone instead which is what the banks want credit cards are on the way out |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 33546325 Canada 03/17/2016 10:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes your credit card now has a Chip, similar to your ATM/debit card, how is this something to fear? You can have your transactions password protected as well! It's not as if Implanted the Chip on you? There are chips everywhere: Your phone, your computer, your (new)car, your TV, your cable box-DVR. It's there to monitor everything from theft and fraud to surveillance-police states personal information gathering for future uses! As long as It's not implanted on "my" body or my loved ones bodies; it's my personal choice but others may differ even on that. Obviously its mostly for no good purpose but it here and you can either live off the grid(come to think of it the even the power meter has a RFID chip now days) or live normally and limit your indiscretions. |
Reality 4U2C User ID: 70699383 United States 03/18/2016 01:13 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The implementation of the "chip" cards is now in part. Because for local point of purchases it only activates its extra features supposedly of security when the business has a chip based card reader. So...then when you order online this "feature" is useless. That would lead me into conjecture that the upcoming fuller features of this dubious tech will be on another level we are now unawares. Keep your eyes and ears open because the Serpent likes to slide it in deep slowly sneaking up behind you. He don't want you to see it coming or be prepared in any way either. AFAIK If I were a guessing person I would see that when SHIF they will use these card based chip trackers to limit and monitor your food rations like they did in Venezuela supermarkets for food & water. IMHO They know how to squeeze your gonads, just now beginning. Stock up on extra food and water, keep what tools you have in your personality to maintain sanity, because when it comes it will come in a way none of us here at GLP expected. Such are the times. Reading the Bible & keeping a sense of humor is crucial. |

phillk6751 User ID: 71690924 United States 03/18/2016 01:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I actually work for a card manufacturing company. There are two main types of chips; contactless and contact type. If your card has a contact area on the left middle then most likely it requires contact with pins much like USB. The point of the chip is to prevent Target style attacks where the POS terminal or devices connected to the same network are infected with certain types of malware. There are encryption keys just to talk to the chip and the bank provides a different key to the chip and terminal at the time of the transaction just to secure the transmission of certain data. The terminal doesn't get any account data or pin unencrypted and would not be able to determine if a pin is correct....it is only told by the bank if the transaction is authorized or not...the data used in that transaction cannot be duplicated to attempt a second transaction. Offline terminals do exist but they work a bit differently. When it comes down to it the chip + mag is a transition to allow backwards compatibility with retailers who dont have the chip readers. For online internet transactions a USB chip reader will eventually be able to be bought at any retailer for a small price and will essentially provide the same level of security. Once they eliminate the mag and readers for your PC are cheap and readily available the security will be extremely tough to crack. |
